SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Briar Cliff (Iowa) of Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) outhit Dakota State (S.D.) 50-15 to earn a convincing 3-0 volleyball match victory (25-14, 25-12 and 25-13) at the Newman Flanagan Center Saturday night. It was the volleyball season opener for the Trojans.
The Chargers, which swept Saint Mary (Neb.) in BC's season opener Friday night, improved their overall record to 2-0.
Briar Cliff closed the first set with a 14-5 scoring run after gaining a three-point lead at 11-8. The Chargers won the first set by the score of 25-14. BC outhit the Trojans 25-7 in the opening set.
The Chargers won the second set by the score of 25-12 after recording a hitting percentage of .533 compared to the Trojans' .000.
Dakota State couldn't bounce back in the third set as BC sealed off the match in the third set (25-13).
Kelci Viesselman led DSU with five kills. Caitlin Pick added four kills. Annika Stephens recorded three kills. Stacey Schuller produced five set assists. Kaylee Vander Wal added four assists.
Chelsey Davis recorded eight digs for the Trojans. Allison Thielsen and Schuller each had six digs. Viesselman had two block assists and a solo block. Tessa Weeldreyer, Schuller and Haley Hillestad each added a block assist.
Pick and Vander Wal each had a service ace for DSU.
Monica Boeding had 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .333 for the Chargers. Jenna Berg added 13 kills with a killing efficiency of .348. Erin Frank accumulated 45 assists.
Boeding recorded 19 digs for Briar Cliff. Amy Frank added 18 digs. Brooke Maguire had six block assists and a solo block. Erin Frank added four block assists.
BC outhit the Trojans .320 to .000 in the match. The Chargers had 55 digs compared to DSU 32 digs.
Briar Cliff had seven blocks while Dakota State had four blocks.
Dakota State returns back to Sioux City again on Wednesday to face another GPAC foe. The Trojans visit Morningside (Iowa) with a junior varsity match at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m. The matches will be a the RVSC-Allee Gym.
