YANKTON, S.D. - The Dakota State University traveled to Riverside Field to visit Mount Marty in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday. The Lancers defeated the Trojans 3-0 in the first game. Dakota State recorded their first win of the season by defeating Mount Marty 6-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.
Dakota State snapped their 15-game losing streak to improve their overall record to 1-15. Mount Marty is 7-10.
Game 1 - Mount Marty 3, Dakota State 0
The Lancers opened with a run scored in the opening inning. Josh Wenande opened the bottom frame with a walk. Jason Livermont hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Nolan Merrill (courtesy runner for Wenande) to second base. With two outs, Allen Hemeyer hit an RBI single to score Merrill as Mount Marty grabbed a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Lancers scored twice to extend their lead to 3-0.
The Trojans got their first hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Ryan Steffensen hit a single through the second base's hole.
Chaz Palmer had two walks and a stolen base in the game for DSU. Steffensen and Jamie Barbour each added a walk.
Livermont, Jared Miller, Hemeyer and Justin Kemp each had a single. Livermont and Miller each recorded an RBI.
Tom Bailey (0-4) suffered the loss for Dakota State. He tossed two innings and allowed three runs (two unearned) on three hits. Andy Lee pitched two shutout innings in relief. Brandon Womack worked the final two innings as he allowed a hit.
Mount Marty used six pitchers in the game and recorded a combined seven strikeouts in the game. Derrik Nelson recorded the win for the Lancers. He pitched two shutout innings. Jason Schmidt recorded the save for the Lancers.
Game 2 - Dakota State 6, Mount Marty 1
Dakota State scored the first run of the game in the opening inning. Palmer opened with a bunt single. He advanced to second on a stolen base. Steffensen hit an RBI single to score Palmer to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers tied the game at 1-1with an RBI sacrifice fly by Jason Schmidt to score Nathan Roche in the bottom of the first inning.
DSU added a run in the top of the third inning. Palmer hit a single with one out. He advanced to second by a passed ball. Steffensen reached on base by Lancers' defensive error and advanced Palmer to third base. Chance Hargrove hit an RBI ground out to score Palmer as the Trojans regained their lead at 2-1.
Barbour hit a single to open the fourth inning for the Trojans. Jake Weier hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Barbour to second base. Dylan Jones recorded a single and advanced Barbour to third base. Kelly Murray hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Barbour to extend the Trojans' lead to 3-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Dakota State scored three times to expand their lead to 6-1. With one out, Barbour and Kyle Braun hit back-to-back singles. Andy Lee recorded a walk to set up a bases loaded situation for DSU. Murray hit a 2-RBI single to score Barbour and Jake Weier (pinch runner for Braun). Lee added a run caused by Lancers' defensive error.
The Lancers were unable to score in the final inning as DSU secured the victory.
Murray went 1-for-3 with three RBIs for Dakota State. Palmer and Barbour each added two singles and two runs scored. Steffensen, Weier, Braun and Jones each had a single. Hargrove, Steffensen and Palmer each swiped one base.
Mathias Godsil had two singles for the Lancers. Livermont added a single.
The Trojans outhit the Lancers 9-3. Mount Marty committed three errors in the game.
Seth Doxey tossed a complete game to record his first pitching win of the season for DSU. He allowed one run on three hits. Doxey struck out six batters.
Nick Huston suffered the loss for the Lancers. He pitched the third inning and allowed one run on one hit. Dave Ogden started the game for Mount Marty as he pitched the first two innings. He gave up one run on three hits.
Dakota State will continue their action on the road next weekend. The Trojans travel to Valley City State for a four-game series in both teams' Dakota Athletic Conference season opener. First game is slated to start at 1 p.m. on next Saturday (April 2) and Sunday (April 3) in Valley City, N.D.
