WAYNE, Neb. – Mayville State (N.D.) concluded the four-game series with a doubleheader sweep over Dakota State (S.D.) Sunday afternoon at the city of Wayne's baseball field. The Comets defeated the Trojans 4-1 and 3-0 in North Star Athletic Association conference doubleheader.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 9-16 and 1-3 NSAA conference record. Mayville State improved their overall record to 21-8 and 3-1 in NSAA conference games.
Game 1 – Mayville State (N.D.) 4, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 - FINAL
The Comets outhit the Trojans 14-5 to earn a 4-1 victory in the first game of the doubleheader.
MSU earned the first lead of the game by opening the second inning with three consecutive hits. Zach Mihic and Rowdy Dove led off with back-to-back singles. Aaron Miller followed up with an RBI double to score Taylor Skytland – courtesy runner for Mihic – to give Mayville State a 1-0 lead.
The Comets extended their lead to 2-0 after a solo home run by Spencer Kidder in the top third frame.
Mayville State scored twice with two outs caused by DSU's defensive error in the top fifth inning, expanding their lead to 4-0.
Dakota State snapped their scoring drought with a run scored in the bottom fifth. JD Farley hit a single with one out. Nathan Wieneke reached on base by a walk. Danny Flahie was hit-by-pitch to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. Nick Serrata recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Farley as DSU trim MSU's lead to 4-1.
Both teams were unable to score in the sixth and seventh innings as the Comets secured the win.
David Halstead was perfect at the plate for the Trojans, going 3-for-3. He had a double and two singles. Farley and Flahie each added a single. Serrata produced an RBI.
Kidder was 4-for-4 at the plate with a home run, three singles and an RBI for the Comets. Pistulka added three singles. Miller had a double, single and an RBI. Dove recorded two hits. Bryan Jacklitch, Spencer Mallonee and Mihic each had a hit.
Drew Sweeter (1-1) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed four innings and allowed two runs on nine hits. Seth Rockafellow pitched three innings in relief. He gave up two unearned runs on five hits.
Alex Lotthammer (2-1) picked up the victory for MSU. He worked for five innings and gave up one run on five hits. Joseph Ferreira earned his first save of the season as he tossed two scoreless innings.
The Comets left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans seven runners left on base.
Game 2 – Mayville State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 - FINAL
Mayville State scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to hold on to a 3-0 victory over DSU in the final game of the four-game series.
The Comets and Trojans went scoreless in the first three innings of the game.
Mihic hit an RBI single in the top fourth frame to give MSU a 1-0 lead.
Dove added an RBI single to extend Comets' lead to 2-0 in the top fifth inning.
Mayville State made it 3-0 in the top sixth after Christian Berry's RBI single.
Dakota State went three-and-out in the final inning as the Comets held on to the victory.
Mihic recorded three singles and an RBI for the Comets. Dove and Berry each added a single and an RBI. Spencer Mallonee and Miller each had a single. Mallonee swiped two bases. Pistulka added a stolen base.
Jordan Sovich (0-5) pitched 5 2/3 innings in loss for the Trojans. He allowed three runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Sovich recorded five strikeouts. Bryan Westra worked for 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up one hit.
Scott Petry (5-1) tossed a complete game victory for the Comets. He gave up six hits.
MSU outhit the Trojans 8-6 in the game.
Mayville State left seven runners on base. DSU had six runners left on base.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans travel to Sioux City, Iowa to take on Briar Cliff (Iowa) in a non-conference doubleheader. The first game is set for 1:30 p.m. at Bishop Mueller Field.
