VALLEY CITY, N.D. – The Dakota State University baseball team returned back to North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) baseball action Friday afternoon at Charlie Brown Stadium, visiting Valley City State (N.D.) in a four-game series. The Vikings rallied back to defeat the Trojans in 3-2 10-inning thriller in the first game of the doubleheader. DSU fell short in the second game by the score of 5-2.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 16-19 and 1-5 in NSAA conference play (5-5 NSAA/Frontier conference record). Valley City State lifted their overall record to 14-21 and 2-2 NSAA (5-3 NSAA/Frontier).
Game 1 – Valley City State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL/10 innings
The NSAA baseball conference four-game series with a pitcher's duel between DSU's Austin Weber and VCSU's Chris Holden.
The Trojans earned the first lead of the game in the opening inning. Ryan Schlesser and David Halstead hit back-to-back singles with one out. Joe Davis produced an RBI single with two outs to score Schlesser, giving DSU a 1-0 lead.
Valley City State ended their scoreless innings with a run scored in the bottom sixth inning. Cole Honl reached on base caused by DSU's defensive error and advanced to third base during the same play. A wild pitch committed by DSU allowed Honl to score, tying the game at 1-1.
Dakota State was unable to score in the top seventh as they left two runners on base. VCSU went three-and-out in the bottom half, extending the game into extra innings.
Davis hit a single with one out in the top eighth frame for the Trojans. He advanced to second after the Vikings threw a wild pitch. Andy Lee drilled an RBI double to score JD Farley, pinch runner for Davis, as DSU regained their lead at 2-1. The Trojans were unable to add more runs as they left three runners on base.
The Vikings answered back with a run scored in the bottom eighth. With bases loaded and no out, the Trojans' defense recorded the first out by a strike out. Dan Buehner hit an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1, but DSU prevented the Vikings to score ending with a strikeout and a ground out. VCSU left all three runners on base as Dakota State forced the game into extra inning.
Both teams were unable to score in the ninth inning. VCSU left a bases loaded situation for the second time when the ninth inning ended.
Buehner led off the bottom 10th with a double for the Vikings. He advanced to third after Mike Gershman hit a ground out. Nathan Bagby recorded an RBI walk-off single to score Buehner, giving the Vikings their first NSAA conference victory.
Davis was 3-for-4 at the plate with three singles and an RBI for Dakota State. Lee produced a double and an RBI. Halstead and Nathan Wieneke each added two singles. Ian Barker and Schlesser each had a hit.
Buehner recorded two doubles and two singles with an RBI for Valley City State. Bagby added two singles. Anthony Necochea, Rambow, Anderson and Jared Meiklejohn each had a hit.
Westra tossed 7 1/3 innings on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He gave up two runs (one unearned) on six hits. Westra struck out five VCSU's batters. Bryant Westra (0-2) recorded the loss in relief. He pitched two innings and gave up a run on four hits.
Holden worked for seven innings for VCSU. He allowed one run on six hits and recorded 10 strikeouts. Jaime Villarreal (2-1) picked up the victory as he tossed three innings in relief. He gave up a run on four hits. He recorded four strikeouts.
Both teams had 10 hits and 13 runners left on base.
Game 2 – Valley City State (N.D.) 5, Dakota State (S.D.) 2 – FINAL
The Vikings earned a 1-0 quick lead to kick off the second game of the doubleheader. Valley City State started with two straight batters reaching safely with Necochea's single and Robert Wiley's walk. Honl hit an RBI single to score Necochea to give VCSU a one-run lead.
Meiklejohn added an RBI single in the bottom second to extend Vikings lead to 2-0 after Gershman's lead-off single.
The Vikings scored twice in the bottom fourth inning with one run coming from DSU's defensive error. Necochea hit an RBI single to make it 4-0 in favor of VCSU.
Anderson hit a triple to kick off the bottom fifth frame for the Vikings. Thomas Houdek recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Anderson as Valley City State increased their lead to 5-0.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought with a run scored in the top sixth inning. Jordan Entrikin reached on base by a walk. Barker hit a double and advanced Entrikin to third base. Danny Flahie added a single to set up a bases loaded situation for the Trojans. Davis recorded an RBI walk to score Entrikin to cut DSU's deficit to 5-1.
DSU attempted to rally back in the final inning. Nick Serrata reached by base-on-balls. Drew Sweeter hit a single to advance Serrata to third base. A passed ball by VCSU allowed Serrata to score to trim VCSU's lead to 5-2. The Trojans were unable to score more run as the Vikings sealed the victory.
Davis had a single and an RBI for Dakota State. Barker had a double. Flahie and Sweeter each had a single.
Anderson recorded a triple and double for Valley City State. Necochea had two hits and an RBI. Honl had a single and an RBI. Gershman, Bagby and Hayden Johnson each had a hit and a run scored.
Jordan Sovich (1-6) recorded the loss on the pitching mound for the Trojans. He pitched five innings and gave up five runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Jamie Jorgensen tossed a scoreless sixth inning, giving up a hit.
Corey Pudas (4-1) earned a complete game victory for the Vikings. He allowed two runs on four hits.
VCSU had eight hits compared to DSU four hits. Both teams left five runners on base.
Dakota State looks to snap their three-game losing skid as they conclude their NSAA four-game series with Valley City State Saturday. The doubleheader kicks off at 12 noon with a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning game. The games will be held at the Charlie Brown Stadium in Valley City.
