MADISON, S.D. - Five different Dakota State men's basketball players scored in double digits Saturday evening to defeat Trinity Bible (N.D.) 90-69 at DSU Fieldhouse. The victory also secured the Trojans their third consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 21 years.
Saturday's game marked the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game to help raise cancer awareness as the coaches worn basketball sneakers during the game.
Dakota State, receiving votes for the sixth straight week in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll, lifted their overall record to 15-7. The last time DSU had three straight winning seasons was from 1989-92 seasons (DSU had four consecutive winning seasons from 1989-93 seasons). Trinity Bible lost their eighth straight game and dropped their overall record to 7-14.
The Trojans and Lions went through two ties and one lead change in the first three minutes and 59 seconds in the game.
At 12-11, DSU went on a 13-4 scoring surge to earn a double-digit lead at 25-15 with 9:12 left in the first-half.
With the Trojans leading at 29-22, DSU closed the first-half with a 21-8 scoring run in the final 5:55 to earn a 20-point halftime lead at 50-30.
Dakota State shot 51.3 percent from the field (20-for-39) in the first half. The Trojans were 8-for-21 from the 3-point range (38.1 percent). Trinity Bible was 11-for-35 from the field (31.4 percent) and 2-for-13 from the 3-point line (22.2 percent).
After DSU extended their lead to 52-34 to kick off the second-half, the Lions used a 14-5 scoring run to trim their deficit to single digit at 57-48 with 13:11 remaining.
The Trojans sealed the game by outscoring TBC 29-14 in the next nine-plus minutes to earn the biggest lead of the game at 86-62 (3:50 left).
Luke Lamb led Dakota State with 17 points. Marcus Smith added 15 points off the bench. John Lamb had 14 points. Terrell Newton scored 13 points. Yusuf Vinson had a double-double of 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Tyrone Gordon, Jr. and Keith Lee II each had seven points. Mitch Trestrail scored six points off the bench.
Luke Lamb, John Lamb and Trestrail each grabbed seven rebounds for the Trojans. Newton and Smith each had five rebounds.
Lee II dished out his career-high eight assists in the game for DSU. John Lamb added five assists.
Newton and Vinson each recorded two blocked shots for the Trojans.
Mikey Rosario scored 16 points for the Lions. Nick Lentz and David Rohrbach each had 13 points. Cameron Martell had nine points.
Martell grabbed 11 rebounds for Trinity Bible. Rohrback earned 10 boards.
Alexander Anthony dished out five assists for TBC. Lentz had three blocked shots.
DSU shot 44.4 percent overall from the field (36-for-81) compared to the Lions' 38.4 percent (28-for-73). The Trojans drained 11 3-pointers in 32 attempts (34.4 percent), while TBC was 6-for-27 from the 3-point arc (22.2 percent).
TBC was 77.8 percent from the free-throw line (7-for-9) compared to the Trojans' 7-for-18 (38.9 percent).
Dakota State outrebounded the Lions 50-46.
The Trojans outscored the Lions 11-2 in fast-break points, 17-8 in points off turnovers and 50-36 inside the paint.
Dakota State heads on the road on Tuesday night. The Trojans take on in-state rival Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Cimpl Arena.
