DICKINSON, N.D. - Third-seed Great Falls (Mont.) quickly earned a 5-0 over fifth-seed Dakota State (S.D.) in the opening inning in the elimination game of the NAIA Softball Unaffiliated Conference Tournament at the Gress Softball Complex. The Trojans were eliminated from postseason play as they dropped a 6-2 contest to the Argonauts.
After recording the first out of the game in the top first inning, Great Falls recorded five consecutive hits starting with Keeley Van Blaricom's double. Alyse Sifuentes hit an RBI single to score Van Blaricom to give Argonauts a 1-0 lead. Kayeley Lyons and Kylie Prough each added an RBI single to extend GF's lead to 3-0. The Argonauts scored twice caused by DSU's defensive errors as their lead grew to 5-0.
The next scoring play came into the seventh and final inning. Sifuentes hit a solo home run to give Great Falls a 6-0 lead.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the bottom seventh frame. Brittany Hill reached on base by a single. Katie Slibowski blasted a 2-run home run with two outs to trim their deficit to 6-2. The Trojans were unable to add more runs as the Argonauts secured the game.
Brittany Hill was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a single for DSU. Slibowski added a home run (her first home run of the season) and produced two RBIs. Shai-Lee Hill recorded a single.
Sifuentes had a home run, two singles and recorded two RBIs for Great Falls. Van Blaricom had a double. Lowry and Renae Nelson each had two singles. Lyons and Prough each had a hit and an RBI.
The Argonauts outhit the Trojans 10-4 in the game.
Great Falls left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans' two runners left on base.
Slibowski (9-9) tossed a complete game loss for Dakota State. She allowed six runs (two unearned) on 10 hits. Slibowski struck out six GF's batters.
Brittani Clifford (5-2) pitched a complete game victory for the Argonauts. She gave up two runs on four hits. She recorded five strikeouts.
Dakota State concluded their season with an overall record of 16-18. It was the final career collegiate softball game for senior Renaye Gamson.
Great Falls (29-14) moves on to another elimination game. They face No. 4 seed Valley City State (N.D.) in the night-cap at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time)/5:30 p.m. (Mountain Time) at Gress Softball Complex in Dickinson, N.D.
