MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team hosted Mayville State (N.D.) Wednesday afternoon in a battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foes at Thue Softball Complex.  The Comets produced three runs in the first inning to gain a 4-1 victory over the Trojans in the first game.  DSU rebounded back with four runs in the bottom third frame in the second game to earn a 4-0 shutout win to gain a doubleheader split with the Comets.

Dakota State currently stands at 10-10 overall record and 1-1 in the Association of Independent Institutions conference record.  The Trojans ended their six-game losing streak in the series with the Comets.  Mayville State dropped to 10-8 overall and 1-1 in A.I.I. after the second game loss.

Game 1 - Mayville State (N.D.) 4, Dakota State 1

MaSU's Jessica Flores opened the game by DSU's defensive error.  Elizabeth Best-Still hit a double and advanced Flores to third base.  Angelique Macias hit an RBI double to score Flores for Comets' first run of the game.  Krista Hendricks hit an RBI ground out to score Best-Still.  Mayville State added a run caused by Trojans' defensive error to give Comets a quick 3-0 lead.

Mayville State made it 4-0 in the top of the fourth frame by Brianne Scott's RBI sacrifice fly to score Katie Corbin.

DSU ended their scoring drought in the bottom of the sixth inning.  The Trojans scored a run caused by Comet's defensive error as DSU trimmed their deficit to 4-1.

The Trojans were unable to mount a comeback in the final inning as they left two runners on base.

Jessica McLane had two singles for DSU.  Chelsea Kruse recorded a double.  Renaye Gamson and Taylor Mackey each added a single.  Emily Kulp scored a run.

Macias had a double, a single, a run scored and an RBI for the Comets.  Best-Still and Ashley McMahon each had a double.  Corbin had two singles.

The Trojans left nine runners on base in the game.  Mayville State had eight runners left on base.

Mackey (5-7) suffered the loss for DSU.  She tossed a complete game and allowed four runs (two unearned) on seven hits.  Mackey struck out three MaSU's batters.

McMahon pitched a complete game victory for the Comets.  She gave up one unearned run on five hits.  McMahon recorded five strikeouts.

Game 2 - Dakota State 4, Mayville State (N.D.) 0

Dakota State scored all of their four runs in the bottom of the third inning to secure a shutout victory over the Comets in the second game.

DSU's Alisa Balesteri and Brittany Tebbe each reached on base by back-to-back defensive error by Mayville State.  Gamson hit a single to set up a bases loaded and one out situation for the Trojans.   Leslie Neiman hit an RBI single to score Balesteri, and added two runs from Tebbe and Gamson caused by MaSU's misplayed grounder error to give DSU a 3-0 lead.  The Trojans added a run from Comets' defensive mistake to extend DSU's lead to 4-0.

Mayville State committed four errors in the bottom of the third inning.

Gamson had a double, a single and a run scored for the Trojans.  Neiman added a single, a run scored and an RBI.  Kulp recorded a single.

Corbin had a double and a single for the Comets.  McMahon and Julie Jackson each added a single.

Both teams had four hits in the game. 

Brittany Hill recorded her first pitching victory of the season for DSU.  She pitched four-plus innings and limited the Comets to one hit.  Hill struck out three MaSU's batters.  Mackey notched her fourth save of the season as she worked three innings in relief.  She held the Comets to one hit and struck out two Comets' batters.

McMahon (8-8) took the loss for Mayville State.  She tossed six innings and gave up four unearned runs on four hits.  She recorded three strikeouts.

Dakota State heads to Sioux City, Iowa this weekend to participate in the Morningside Tournament.  The Trojans kick off the tournament on Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Midland (Neb.).  DSU continues their tournament play against Northwestern (Iowa) at 3 p.m. and Bellevue (Neb.) at 5 p.m.  The Morningside Tournament concludes on Sunday as Trojans face Mount Marty (S.D.) at 1 p.m. and host-team Morningside at 3 p.m.
