VALLEY CITY, N.D. - The Dakota State University softball team competed in the DAC Softball Postseason Tournament Saturday at the College Complex. The seventh-seeded Trojans suffered an 11-3 defeat to second-seeded Minot State in six innings. DSU eliminated sixth-seeded Valley City State 5-3 in the loser's out game to remain alive in the tournament.
The Trojans snapped their 11-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 9-34.
Opening Round: Minot State 11, Dakota State 3 (6 innings) - Box Score
Minot State scored one run in the bottom of the second inning. The Trojans tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning.
The Beavers added three runs in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 4-1.
Dakota State would cut the lead to 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning.
Minot State scored seven times in the bottom sixth inning to end the game by eight-run mercy rule.
Ashley Souphimdara went 2-for-3 with an RBI for Dakota State. Ashley Stevenson, Kelsie Peterson and Leslie Neiman added a single.
Molly Lundeen recorded a home run, a single, two runs scored and two RBIs for Minot State. Deanne Mitchell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Janessa Penner, Tiffany Friesen and Melissa Elliott each had two hits.
Maddie Willers started the game for Dakota State. She allowed four runs on seven hits. Ashton Lansink (4-22) suffered the loss. She tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs on six hits.
Friesen (7-3) recorded the win for the Beavers. She gave up three runs on five hits in four innings. Mandy Greenberg recorded her third save of the season. She tossed 1 2/3 shutout innings.
Loser's Out Game: Dakota State 5, Valley City State 3 - Box Score
The Trojans scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Valley City State broke their scoring drought in the top of the third inning to grab a 2-1 lead.
Dakota State regained their lead with three runs scored in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.
The Trojans extended it to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning. VCSU trimmed the Trojans' lead at 5-3 in the top of the sixth inning as the Trojans held on for the win.
Danielle Vitale went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs for the Trojans. Amanda Stevenson went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Ashley Stevenson and Peterson each added a hit and an RBI.
Cyndi Figol, Jane Pettit and Krystal Hathaway each had two hits for Valley City State.
Willers (5-12) pitched a complete game win for the Trojans. She allowed three runs on 10 hits. She struck out four batters.
Paige Smith (8-9) took the loss for the Vikings. She tossed four innings and gave up five runs on five hits. Hathaway pitched two shutout innings in relief.
Dakota State will look to stay alive in the tournament Sunday as they face fourth-seeded Mayville State in the loser's out game at 10 a.m. The championship game is slated at 5:30 p.m.
