MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team returned home Wednesday evening. The Trojans welcomed their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls in a non-conference doubleheader at the Thue Softball Complex. USF swept Dakota State 5-2 and 11-2 in six innings.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 8-25. The Cougars won their sixth straight game and raised their overall record to 8-20.
After a scoreless first inning, Janni Brylla hit an RBI ground out to score Baylee Washburn for USF's first run of the game in the top of the second inning.
Trojan Amanda Stevenson hit an RBI single up to the middle to score Ashley Stevenson to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning.
Dakota State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning by Ashley Stevenson's RBI bases-on-ball to score Jessica McLane.
USF scored twice in the top of the fifth inning to regain their lead at 3-2. Andrea Hacker hit an 2-RBI double to score Brianna Hegadahl and Caitlin Block.
The Cougars added two runs in the final inning as the Trojans fell short.
Kelsie Peterson had a triple for DSU. Taryn Walter went 2-for-3 with a double and a single. Ashley Souphimdara, Amanda Stevenson and Danielle Vitale each had a single. Ashley Stevenson and Amanda Stevenson each had an RBI. Souphimdara recorded a stolen base.
Hacker went 2-for-4 with a double, a single and three RBIs for USF. Johnson added a double and a single. Block, Jamie Sorenson, Washburn and Brylla each recorded a single.
Ashton Lansink suffered the loss for the Trojans. She pitched seven inning and allowed five runs (two unearned) on eight hits.
Johnson (4-5) recorded the victory for USF. She tossed a complete game and gave up two runs (one unearned) on seven hits. She struck out eight batters.
Dakota State left eight runners on base. The Cougars had six runners left on base.
The Cougars scored a combined five runs from the top of the first to the third innings to grab a 5-0 lead.
DSU ended their scoring drought in the bottom of the third inning caused by an USF's defensive error to trim the Cougars' lead to 5-1.
USF scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 9-1.
The Trojans scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning to continue the game. Souphimdara scored caused by USF's defensive miscue.
The Cougars added two runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-2 lead. USF ended the game in mercy run rule.
McLane and Vitale each had a double for the Trojans. Souphimdara went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Peterson added a single.
Five Cougars recorded at least two hits in the game. Brylla went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, a run scored and two RBIs. Sorenson and Hacker each had a triple. Katie Farley had a double.
Lansink (4-14) recorded the loss on the mound for DSU. She tossed six innings and allowed 11 runs (three earned) on 14 hits.
Christina Bonrud (4-10) notched the win for the Cougars. She pitched six innings and allowed two unearned runs on five hits.
Dakota State left nine runners on base. USF had six runners left on base.
The Trojans return to DAC conference action on the road this weekend in Jamestown, N.D. DSU will face Jamestown College in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. on each day.
