PORTLAND, N.D. - The Dakota State University softball team traveled to Mayville State in the DAC's four-game series Saturday and Sunday. Mayville State swept the Trojans 4-2 and 10-2 on Saturday. On Sunday, the Comets took game one 9-6 and the Trojans won the second game 12-2 in five innings.
The Trojans' overall record stands at 8-23 and 3-13 in the DAC conference. Mayville State is 15-21 and 7-5 in the DAC.
Game One - Box Score
Mayville State 4, Dakota State 2
Jessica McLane hit an 2-RBI single to score Ashley Souphimdara and Amanda Stevenson for the Trojans' a 2-0 early lead in the top of the first inning.
Comet Samantha Newman hit an RBI single to score Krista Hendricks to cut the Trojans' lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first inning.
Mayville State tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second inning by Laura Koness' RBI single to score Jessica Rico.
Hendricks hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Comets' 4-2 lead.
McLane went 1-for-2 with two RBIs for Dakota State. Ashley Stevenson had a double. Souphimdara, Amanda Stevenson and Leslie Neiman each had a single. Souphimdara swiped two bases.
For Mayville State, Newman went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Lyndsi Maglish, Marissa Olmo, Amanda Lara, Megan Martin and Kolness each recorded a single. Hendricks scored twice and recorded two RBIs.
Maddie Willers suffered the loss for the Trojans. She pitched a complete game and allowed four runs (one unearned) on eight hits.
Morgan Bickell tossed a complete game win for Mayville State. She gave up two runs on five hits.

Mayville State 10, Dakota State 2 (5 innings)
Mayville State scored four times in the opening inning highlighted by Newman's two-run home run.
In the top of the second inning, Laura Shanafelt hit an RBI bunt single to score Brittany Haiar (pinch runner for McLane) to record the Trojans' first run of the game. Jayna Ackerman added a run by a wild pitch to cut the Comets' lead to 4-2.
Elizabeth Best Still hit an RBI triple to score Maglish to put Mayville State's lead at 5-2 in the bottom of the second inning.
The Comets scored a combined five runs from third to the fifth innings to end the game by an eight-run mercy rule.
Amanda Stevenson went perfect behind the plate for the Trojans. She went 3-for-3 with three singles. Shanafelt added a single and an RBI.
For the Comets, Newman went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Best Still had a triple, a single and two RBIs. Maglish went 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, three runs scored and two RBIs.
Willers took the loss for DSU. She tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed 10 runs on 12 hits. She struck out six batters.
Ashley Kempenich started the game for the Comets. She pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one run on one hit. She allowed four walks. Bickell recorded the victory and pitched 3 2/3 innings. She allowed one run on three hits.

The Comets exploded for a combined eight runs in the first two innings of the game.
Dakota State scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning by Kelsie Peterson's RBI single to score Ashley Stevenson.
The Trojans added a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Mayville State scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 9-2.
Souphimdara added a run in the top of the fifth inning as the Trojans trimmed the Comets' lead to 9-3.
The Trojans rallied for three runs in the final innings but fell short to Mayville State 9-6.
Three Trojan players recorded a double in the game by Ashley Stevenson, Ackerman and McLane. McLane had two RBIs. Souphimdara went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Amanda Stevenson had two singles and an RBI. Danielle Vitale added a single and an RBI.
For Mayville State, Newman, Olmo and Maglish each recorded a home run. Hendricks, Lara and Newman each added a double. Olmo had four RBIs and Newman added three RBIs.
Willers took the loss for Dakota State. She tossed six innings and allowed nine runs on 14 hits.
Bickell (12-6) pitched a complete game win for the Comets. She gave up six runs on 11 hits.
Game Two - Box Score
Dakota State 12, Mayville State 2 (5 innings)
The Trojans exploded for eight runs in the top of the first inning. Peterson hit a 3-run home run to score Souphimdara and Amanda Stevenson. Vitale hit a solo home run. Shanafelt hit a grand slam to extend the Trojans' lead to 8-0.
Comet Hendricks hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning to cut the Trojans' deficit to 8-1.
Dakota State scored four times in the top of the fifth inning. Amanda Stevenson hit an 2-RBI double to score Shanafelt and Ashley Stevenson. Peterson hit her second home run of the game to score Amanda Stevenson to put the Trojans up 12-1.
The Comets scored once in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Trojans ended the game by mercy run rule.
Peterson and Amanda Stevenson each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for DSU. Peterson had two home runs and five RBIs. Amanda Stevenson recorded two RBIs. Shanafelt went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Vitale had a home run, a run scored and an RBI. Souphimdara added three hits.
For Mayville State, Hendricks, Best Still and Newman each had two hits. Hendricks had two RBIs.
Willers (4-11) recorded the victory for the Trojans. She tossed five innings and allowed two runs (one unearned) on eight hits.
Katie Rieu (0-2) suffered the loss for the Comets. She pitched 1/3 innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Bickell pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief and gave up eight runs on 10 hits. Ashley Kempenich closed the game in 1/3 innings.
Dakota State returns home on Wednesday night. The Trojans will face their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls at the Thue Softball Complex in Madison, S.D. The non-conference doubleheader will start at 5 p.m.
