MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team returned home Thursday night. The Trojans hosted Mount Marty in a non-conference doubleheader at the Thue Softball Complex. Mount Marty took the first game 9-6 and the Trojans defeated the Lancers 9-1 in six innings to earn a split.
The Trojans ended their seven-game losing streak and raised their overall record to 7-20. Mount Marty is 9-16.
The Trojans scored first in the bottom of the second inning. Jayna Ackerman hit an RBI single to score Kelsie Peterson for DSU's 1-0 lead.
Mount Marty opened the fourth inning with four straight hits. The Lancers scored four times highlighted by Andrea Hansen's two-run home run as the Lancers grabbed a 4-1 lead.
DSU's Peterson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ashley Stevenson added a ground ball RBI to score Leslie Neiman to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Lancer Lauren Donlin hit an RBI triple to score Katrina Romero in the top of the fifth inning. Alexandria Cihak added a ground out RBI to score Donlin to extend MMC's lead to 6-3.
The Lancers added a run in the top of the sixth inning caused by Trojans' defensive error.
Dakota State scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two outs, the Trojans recorded three straight hits. Ashley Stevenson and Laura Shanafelt recorded back-to-back singles. Amanda Stevenson hit 2-RBI double to score Ashley Stevenson and Shanafelt as the Trojans trimmed the Lancers' lead to 7-5.
Jen Jerdee hit an RBI single to score Donlin and Hansen recorded an RBI sacrifice fly to score Cihak to extend Lancers' lead to 9-5 in the final inning.
The Trojans scored once in the final inning by Lancers' defensive error, but the Trojans' rally fell short with two runners left on base.
Both teams had 13 hits in the game.
Peterson went perfect behind the plate for the Trojans. She went 4-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Ackerman added two singles and two RBIs. Amanda Stevenson went 2-for-4 with a double, a single and two RBIs. Ashley Stevenson, Shanafelt, Danielle Vitale, Jessica McLane and Ashley Souphimdara each had a single.
For Mount Marty, Hansen went 3-for-3 with a home run, a run scored and three RBIs. Cihak was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Donlin went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored. Emily Girard had two singles and an RBI.
Maddie Willers (3-8) suffered the loss for the Trojans. She pitched a complete game and allowed nine runs (two unearned) on 13 hits. She struck out six batters.
Brittany Bruns (7-3) recorded the victory for Mount Marty. She tossed four innings and gave up three runs on six hits. Erica Loutsch pitched three innings in relief. She allowed three runs (one unearned) on seven hits.
DSU left 10 runners on base. Mount Marty has five runners left on base.
The Lancers scored first in the top of the first inning caused by Trojans' defensive error.
DSU tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning. Peterson hit an RBI fielder's choice to score Vitale.
Ashley Stevenson opened the bottom of the third inning with a triple to deep right-center. Souphimdara hit an RBI single to score Ashley Stevenson Amanda Stevenson hit an RBI double to score Souphimdara to extend the Trojans' lead to 3-1.
The Trojans exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Vitale hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Souphimdara. Peterson added 2-RBI to score Amanda Stevenson and McLane. Neiman added an RBI double to score Peterson for Trojans' 7-1 lead.
Shanafelt opened the bottom of the sixth frame with a walk. Ashley Stevenson hit a single to advance Shanafelt to second. Amanda Stevenson hit 2-RBI double to score Ashley Stevenson and Shanafelt as the Trojans' ended the game by eight-run mercy rule.
The Trojans outhit the Lancers 12-2.
Amanda Stevenson went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBIs for the Trojans. Ashley Stevenson added a triple, a single and two runs scored. Souphimdara went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and recorded a stolen base. Neiman added a double and a single with one RBI. Peterson had three RBIs.
Amanda Soehl and Paige Rechtenbaugh each had a single for Mount Marty.
Mount Marty left 10 runners on base. The Trojans had five runners left on base.
Ashton Lansink (4-12) tossed a complete game win for DSU. She allowed one unearned run on two hits. She struck out four batters.
Loutsch (1-8) recorded the loss for the Lancers. She pitched three innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Bruns came in for 2 1/3 innings in relief. She allowed six runs (three unearned) on six hits.
Dakota State returns back to DAC conference action this weekend on the road. The Trojans will face Mayville State in a DAC four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. each day in Portland, N.D.
