VERMILLION, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team faced University of South Dakota, an NCAA Division I School, at the windy Nygaard Field Tuesday. The Trojans suffered a pair of 9-1 and 11-2 defeats to the Coyotes.
DSU dropped their overall record to 6-19. USD is 12-23-1.
In the bottom of the first inning, Alexa Rudeen hit double to score Callie Roan and Mel Johnson hit an RBI single to score Rudeen for the Coyotes' 2-0 early lead.
DSU's Leslie Neiman hit an RBI single to score Danielle Vitale to trim Coyotes' lead to 2-1 in the top of the second inning.
The Coyotes added a run in the bottom of the third inning to extend their lead to 3-1. Rachel Fricke hit an RBI single to score Alaina Novotny.
USD scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning highlighted by Roan's three-run home run for a Coyotes' 8-1 lead.
Dakota State was unable to score in the top of the fifth inning with a bases loaded and two outs situation.
Roan ended the game, by the eight-run mercy rule, in the bottom of the fifth inning by an RBI double rule to score Jessica Lussman.
Neiman went perfect behind the plate for Dakota State. She went 2-for-2 with two singles and a RBI. Ashley Stevenson, Amanda Stevenson, Jessica McLane and Kelsie Peterson each had a single.
Roan went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, two runs scored and four RBIs for South Dakota. Rudeen added two doubles and two runs scored. Michelle Jones recorded two singles.
Maddie Willers (3-7) suffered the loss for the Trojans. She pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up nine runs (one unearned) on 11 hits.
Johnson (9-9) recorded the win for the Coyotes. She tossed a complete game and allowed one run on six hits and struck out eight batters.
After two scoreless innings, Roan hit a solo home run to give the Coyotes' an 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Ashley Souphimdara opened with a single in the top of the fourth inning for Dakota State. She advanced to second by recording a stolen base, her 18th this season. With one out, she advanced to third by a passed ball. Amanda Stevenson hit an RBI single to score Souphimdara to tie the game at 1-1. Peterson added an RBI single to score Brittany Haiar, pinch runner for Vitale, to put the Trojans up 2-1.
Roan hit her second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at 2-2. Rudeen and Novotny hit back-to-back doubles. Melissa Jones recorded an two-RBI single to extend USD's lead to 5-2.
The game ended by a mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth inning when Jones hit a grand slam for USD.
Souphimdara went perfect behind the plate for Dakota State. She went 3-for-3 with three singles, a run scored and swiped one base. Amanda Stevenson was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Peterson added a single and a RBI.
Jones finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run and recorded six RBIs for the Coyotes. Roan, Rudeen, Novotny and Dani Bahlmann each recorded two hits.
Ashton Lansink (3-12) took the loss for DSU. She tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed 11 runs (two unearned) on 12 hits. She struck out three batters.
Erica Denney (1-5) recorded the win for USD. She pitched six innings and gave up two runs (one unearned) on five hits and struck out seven batters.
Dakota State will return home on Thursday as they host Mount Marty. The non-conference doubleheader will be held at the Thue Softball Complex at 5:30 p.m.
