MITCHELL, S.D. - The Trojan softball team traveled to the Caldwell Park to face their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday. DWU shut down the Trojans in the first game 2-0. DSU won the second game 6-1 to earn a split with the Tigers.
Dakota State's overall record stands at 6-13. DWU is 6-19.
After three scoreless innings, the Tigers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tiffany Bonifacio opened with a triple. Roni Nekrassoff hit an RBI double to score Bonifacio.
Nekrassoff added a RBI sacrifice fly to score Laurne Lynds in the bottom of the sixth inning for DWU's 2-0 lead.
Dakota State was limited to three singles in the game. Ashley Stevenson, Jayna Ackerman and Jayne Peterson recorded a hit.
Bonifacio was 2-for-2 with a run scored for the Tigers. Roni Nekrassorff recorded two RBIs. Nicole Haley and Lynds each recorded a single.
Maddie Willers (3-6) suffered the loss for DSU. She pitched a complete game and gave up two runs on six hits.
Brandi Nekrassof (1-3) pitched a complete game win for the Tigers. She allowed three hits and struck out eight batters.
Ashley Souphimdara and Kelsie Peterson opened the first inning with two straight singles. Ashley Stevenson added a walk to give a bases-loaded, no out situation for the Trojans. Amanda Stevenson hit a RBI sacrifice (ground out) to score Souphimdara for Trojans' first run of the game. Leslie Nieman added two-RBI single to score Peterson and Ashley Stevenson to give DSU a 3-0 early lead.
DWU's Haley opened the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 3-1.
In the top of the third inning, Ashley Stevenson opened with a single. Amanda Stevenson hit an RBI triple to score Ashley Stevenson to make it 4-1 Trojans. Danielle Vitale added a RBI single to score Amanda Stevenson and Jessica McLane hit a RBI single to score Vitale to extend Trojans' lead to 6-1.
Dakota State outhit DWU 11-6 in the game.
Vitale and Taryn Walter went 2-for-4 for the Trojans. Ashley Stevenson had two runs scored. Neiman recorded two RBIs. Peterson, Amanda Stevenson, Vitale and McLane each had one RBI. Souphimdara and Brittany Hair each swiped one base.
For Dakota Wesleyan, Haley went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Bonifacio, Nekrassof, Nekrassoff and Jess Hart each recorded a single.
Ashton Lansink (3-7) tossed a complete game victory for Dakota State. She allowed one run on six hits.
Kelsey Timons (1-8) recorded the loss for DWU. She pitched 2 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on eight hits. Nekrassof pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief. She limited DSU to three hits and struck out four batters.
Dakota State returns back to DAC conference action this weekend. The Trojans will host Minot State in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m. at the Thue Softball Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
