MADISON, S.D. - The Trojan softball team returned back to DAC conference action Friday. Dakota State hosted Valley City State at the Thue Complex. Valley City State won the first game 9-2. The Trojans shut down the Vikings in the second game 7-0.
Dakota State is 4-11 overall record and 1-5 in the DAC. The Vikings is 15-6 and 1-1 in the conference.
Cyndi Figol hit a RBI double in the opening inning to score Paige Smith for VCSU's 1-0 lead.
The Trojans scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to take a 2-1 lead. Ashley Souphimdara hit a triple. Kelsie Peterson hit a RBI single to score Souphimdara. Peterson scored caused by Vikings' defensive error.
Valley City State tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth inning. Lacey Hauser hit a triple. Krystal Hathaway hit a RBI single to score Hauser.
Amanda Carter hit a RBI single to score Adrianna Boychuk in the fifth inning to extend Vikings' lead to 3-2.
The Vikings scored five times in the sixth inning and added a run in the final inning.
Souphimdara and Peterson each went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Trojans. Amanda Stevenson and Ashley Stevenson added a single. Peterson and Danielle Vitale each recorded a RBI.
Smith went 3-for-5 for the Vikings. She recorded two runs and two RBIs. Figol, Carter and Hathaway each went 2-for-4.
Maddie Willers (2-5) suffered the loss for DSU. She tossed 5 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (one unearned) on nine hits. Ashton Lansink came in for 1 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed four runs (one earned) on four hits.
Hathaway (7-0) tossed a complete game win for Valley City State. She allowed two runs (one unearned) on six hits. She struck out 13 batters.
Dakota State scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Vitale hit a 2-RBI double to score Peterson and Amanda Stevenson.
The Trojans added two runs in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Amanda Stevenson hit a RBI double to score Peterson. Amanda Stevenson scored caused by Vikings' miscue.
Trojan Ashley Stevenson hit a 2-RBI single to score Laura Shanafelt and Souphimdara in the bottom of the sixth inning. Vitale added a RBI single to score Ashley Stevenson to give the Trojans' 7-0 lead.
Dakota State outhit the Vikings 10-3.
Ashley Stevenson finished the game 3-for-4 behind the plate for the Trojans. She recorded three RBIs and scored three runs. Vitale added a double and single with three RBIs. Leslie Neiman, Souphimdara and Peterson had a single.
Boychuk, Jen Shadlock and Hayley Bevan each had a single for Valley City State.
Lansink (2-6) pitched a complete game victory for the Trojans. She limited Valley City State to three hits.
Smith (5-4) took the loss for VCSU. She tossed five innings and allowed seven runs (two unearned) on seven hits. Stephanie O'Dell pitched one inning in relief and allowed three this.
The Trojans and Vikings will conclude their four-game series Saturday at the Thue Complex. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
