BROOKINGS, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team traveled to the Jackrabbits Softball Stadium for a single non-conference game with NCAA Division I South Dakota State Wednesday. The Jackrabbits scored four runs in the third and sixth innings to defeat the Trojans 10-2.
The loss dropped the Trojans' overall record to 2-7. South Dakota State raised their overall record to 8-15.
SDSU scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Devon Reicke opened with a single and advanced to second on Andrea New's sacrifice bunt. After a ground out by Ashley Duranzo to advance Reicke to third, Kelsey Lunn hit a RBI single to score Reicke.
The Trojans were not able to convert their scoring opportunity to tie the game after drawing two walks from Danielle Vitale and Leslie Neiman in the second inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, South Dakota revealed off four runs including Kristin Honen's 2-run home run to extend Jackrabbits' lead to 5-0.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought with two runs scored in the top fifth inning. With bases loaded and two-out situation, Amanda Stevenson hit a 2-RBI single to score Laura Shanafelt and Ashley Souphimdara to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Jackrabbits added a run in the fifth inning to make it 6-2. SDSU produced four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game by mercy run rule.
SDSU outhit the Trojans 18-3. Both teams left eight runners on base.
Stevenson went 1-for-3 with two RBIs for the Trojans. Kelsie Peterson and Vitale added a single. Shanafelt had two walks.
Honken finished the game 2-for-4 with a home run, a single and three RBIs. Reick, New, Broshar and Tina Winter each had two singles.
Ashton Lansink (1-4) suffered the loss for the Trojans. She tossed four innings and gave up five runs, four unearned, on 11 hits. Maddie Willers pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief and allowed five runs, one unearned, on seven hits.
Kori Seidlitz (7-9) recorded the victory for SDSU. She pitched five innings and allowed two runs, one unearned, on three hits. She struck out eight batters and gave up four walks. Pam Nicholson pitched one shutout inning in relief.
The Trojans will play a non-conference doubleheader with University of Sioux Falls Thursday. The game will be held at the Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, starting at 3 p.m.
