RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Dakota State University softball team played their final two games of the four-game series with Black Hills State at the Parkview Softball Complex Monday. The Trojans fell to Black Hills State 12-4 and 11-5.
DSU dropped their overall record to 2-6 and 0-4 in the DAC conference. Black Hills State won their fourth straight game to raise their overall record to 11-4 and 4-0 in the DAC.
Black Hills State scored five runs in the opening inning. The Trojans cut the deficit to 5-2 in the top of the second inning. The Yellow Jackets extended their lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second inning to make it 7-2.
Dakota State scored twice in the third inning to make it 7-4 BHSU. The Yellow Jackets scored another five runs in the fourth inning and ended the game in the fifth inning by mercy run rule.
Jayna Ackerman went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs for the Trojans. Ashley Souphimdara, Amanda Stevenson and Danielle Vitale each recorded a single. Laura Shanafelt had two walks and scored once.
For Black Hills State, Maria Herber had a home run, a double and three RBIs. Aleishia Giesey went perfect behind the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. Danielle Briere added a double. Heidi Kwilinski recorded two singles and three runs scored.
Black Hills State had six stolen bases in the game - three by Kwilinski, two by Giesey and one from Karissa Norte.
Maddie Willer (1-3) took the loss for DSU. She pitched four innings and gave up 12 runs on 12 hits.
Katie Wagner pitched a complete-game win for the Yellow Jackets. She allowed four runs, one unearned on four hits. She struck out six batters.
Dakota State opened with three runs in the first inning and one run in the second inning for a 4-0 lead. Black Hills State scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Trojans added a run in the fourth inning to make it 5-3. The Yellow Jackets tied the game at five with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
BHSU broke up the 5-5 tie with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Amanda Stevenson and Jessica McLane each went 2-for-4 behind the plate for the Trojans. They recorded a double and a single. McLane had three RBIs. Ashley Stevenson and Shanafelt added two singles.
Giesey and Kyley Barela each had a double for BHSU. Wagner went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Ashley Berg had four singles. Kwilinski added three singles.
DSU left 12 runners on base compared to BHSU's eight runners left on base.
Ashton Lansink (1-3) recorded the loss for DSU. She tossed six innings and allowed 11 runs, four unearned, on 18 hits.
Alexandra Huntington started the game for the Yellow Jackets. She pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, one unearned on four hits. Norte recorded the win for BHSU as she tossed 5 1/3 innings. She allowed one run on seven hits.
Dakota State will try to bounce back in the winning column Wednesday afternoon. The Trojans will play one game with NCAA Division I South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. The game will be held at the Jackrabbits Softball Stadium at 4 p.m.
