RAPID CITY, S.D. - The Trojan softball team opened their DAC conference season on the road, facing Black Hills State Sunday. The four-game series with the Yellow Jackets was held at the Parkview Softball Complex. The Yellow Jackets swept the Trojans 9-2 and 9-1.
The Trojans dropped their overall record to 2-4 and 0-2 in the DAC. Black Hills State raised their record to 9-4 and 2-0 in the conference.
The Yellow Jackets came on board in the first inning with two runs scored. Dakota State scored a run in the second and third innings to tie the game at two apiece. BHSU scored once in the bottom third and fourth innings to make it 4-2.
Black Hills State scored four runs in the bottom fifth inning and one run in the sixth inning.
Jessica McLane went perfect behind the plate, going 2-for-2 for the Trojans. Amanda Stevenson hit a solo home run. Ashley Souphimdara added a single.
Katie Wagner went 3-for-4 for the Yellow Jackets. She recorded a double, two singles and two RBIs. Ashley Berg had a double, two singles, three runs scored and three stolen bases. Karissa Norte had two singles and three RBIs.
Maddie Willers (1-2) suffered the loss for DSU. She tossed 3 1/3 innings and allowed four unearned runs on six hits. Willers struck out four batters. Ashton Lansink pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief. She allowed five runs, two unearned, on four hits.
Wagner pitched a complete game for the Yellow Jackets. She allowed the Trojans two runs, one unearned, on five hits. She struck out 11 batters.
The Trojans scored first in the game with a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Black Hills State scored eight runs in the bottom second inning to make it 8-1 Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets ended the game by mercy rule in the bottom fifth with a run scored.
Ashley Stevenson, Amanda Stevenson, Danielle Vitale, Laura Shanafelt and Brittany Haiar each recorded a single for the Trojans. Vitale had one RBI to score Ashley Stevenson.
Danielle Briere went 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs for BHSU. Aleishia Giesey added a double, a single and two RBIs. Berg had a single and swiped two bases.
Lansink (1-2) took the loss for the Trojans. She pitched four innings and allowed nine runs on 11 hits.
Norte tossed a complete game victory for BHSU. She gave up one run on five hits.
The Trojans and Black Hills State will conclude their four-game series today (Monday).
