ST. CLOUD, Minn. - The Dakota State University women's fast-pitch softball team opened their 2010 campaign last weekend. The Trojans took part of the Husky Invitational, hosted by St. Cloud State University at the Husky Dome.
On Saturday, DSU suffered an opening season loss to DAC foe Valley City State. The Trojans bounced back and defeated Bemidji State. Southwest Minnesota State defeated the Trojans on Sunday. DSU notched the second victory of the invitational by defeating University of Minnesota-Crookston to earn an 2-2 overall record. The Trojans earned their two wins over NCAA Division II schools.
Valley City State game - Box Score
The Vikings scored a total of 12 runs in the first three innings to defeat the Trojans 12-1 in five innings. DSU scored one run in the fourth inning.
Danielle Vitale went 2-for-3 behind the plate with a RBI for the Trojans. Leslie Neiman and Amanda Stevenson each recorded a double. Laura Shanafelt added a single. Ashley Souphimdara swiped two bases.
Valley City State had 12 hits in the game. Paige Smith and Jane Pettit went perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Pettit had a double and two RBIs. Cyndi Figol and Hayley Bevan each had two singles.
Ashton Lansink suffered the loss for DSU. She pitched three innings and gave up 12 runs on 12 hits. Lanston struck out two batters. Maddie Willers pitched one inning of relief and limited VCSU to no hits.
Smith pitched a complete game for the Vikings. She struck out five batters and allowed three walks.
Bemidji State game - Box Score
The Trojans notched their first victory of the season over NCAA Division II Bemidji State. The Trojans scored four runs in the second inning and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Beavers.
The Trojans outhit the Beavers 12-11.
Shanafelt went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Vitale, Kelsie Peterson and Jayna Ackerman each added two singles. Souphimdara, Ashley Stevenson and Brittany Haiar each had a single. Souphimdara recorded one stolen base.
Every Beaver hitter recorded at least one hit in the game. Stephanie Rossman went 2-for-4 behind the plate with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Jamie Ford added a double.
Bemidji State had 10 runners left on base. DSU had eight runners left on base.
Willers recorded her first win of the season for Dakota State. She tossed 5 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on 10 hits. She struck out five batters. Lansink recorded a save for the Trojans. She pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and limited the Beavers to one hit.
Kelsey Saralampi suffered the loss for Bemidji State. She pitched three innings and allowed five runs on seven hits. Chelsea Cardinal came in relief for three innings. She limited DSU to five hits and no runs.
Southwest Minnesota State game - Box Score
The Mustangs scored two times in the first and third innings to defeat the Trojans 4-0.
Amanda Stevenson had two singles for DSU. Souphimdara and Neiman each added a single. Souphimdara swiped the base once.
Christine Borowiak went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs for Southwest Minnesota State. Krista Steen and Amanda Neumann each added a double. Meaghan Laetsch and Britney Hallahan each had a single.
Willers suffered her first pitching loss of the season for Dakota State. She tossed six innings. She gave up four runs, two unearned, on six hits.
Ali Honken pitched a complete game victory for the Mustangs. She allowed four hits and struck out 10 batters.
Minnesota-Crookston game - Box Score
The Trojans bounced back in the final game of the Husky Invitational, defeating the Eagles 9-4.
DSU scored once in the second inning, but Minnesota-Crookston responded in the bottom second inning for an Eagles' 2-1 lead. DSU stormed back in the third inning and scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. The Eagles cut the deficit to 5-4 after the third inning. Dakota State added three runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning for the victory.
The Trojans had 14 hits in the game compared to the Eagles' nine.
Vitale went 3-for-4 behind the plate and three RBIs for Dakota State. Neiman added a double, two singles and two RBIs. Kelsie Peterson went perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Souphimdara had a single and recorded two stolen bases. Amanda Stevenson, Lansink and Haiar each added a single.
Krystal Plouff and Micki Nogowski each had a double and a single for Minnesota-Crookston. Kayla Bowar, Holly Repke, Krista Kenyon, Stacey Marcum and Erin Fowle each had a single.
Lansink recorded her first pitching victory for the Trojans. She tossed a complete game and allowed four runs and struck out six batters.
Fowle took the loss for Minnesota-Crookston. She pitched a complete game. Fowle gave up nine runs and struck out five batters.
Dakota State was originally scheduled to participate in the Hastings Tournament this weekend and has been canceled due to wet playing field conditions. The Trojans will play a four-game series with Black Hills State in a DAC Softball conference opening weekend on March 20-21 in Spearfish, S.D.
