DICKINSON, N.D. - The Dakota State University Softball team ended their season at the DAC Postseason Tournament in Dickinson, N.D. last Saturday. The Trojans went 0-2 in the tournament.
First Round - Black Hills State 8, Dakota State 1
The fifth-seeded Black Hills State grabbed an early 5-0 lead in the game. The Yellow Jackets extended with two runs in the fifth inning to make it 7-0.
Fourth-seeded Dakota State came on board in the bottom fifth inning and scored their only run of the game. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the sixth inning to make a final score of 8-1.
Ashley Souphimdara went 2-for-3 with a walk for the Trojans. Sylvia Leon had three singles and a RBI. Jamie Becker added a double. Jayna Ackerman recorded a single.
Souphimdara extended her single season school record in stolen bases with 28.
For Black Hills State, Karissa Norte went perfect behind the plate, going 4-for-4. She recorded a home run and a double. Krista Gleiforst and Aleishia Giesey added a double. Norte, Kelli Graham and Maria Herber each had two RBIs.
The Yellow Jackets outhit the Trojans 12-6. Both teams left eight runners on base.
Kendra Roth (10-16) suffered the loss for the Trojans. She tossed 2 1/3 innings and allowed five runs (one unearned) on six hits. Dakota Novotny came in relief for 4 2/3 innings. She gave up three runs (two unearned) on six hits.
Jessica Clark (7-5) pitched a complete game win for the Yellow Jackets. She gave up three runs (two unearned) on six hits. Clark struck out eight batters.
Loser's Out Game - Minot State 9, Dakota State 1 (6 innings)
The Trojans met third seed Minot State in the loser's out game. The Beavers defeated sixth seed Mayville State in the first round and suffered a defeat to second seed Jamestown.
Minot State jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and extended to 5-0 in the third inning. The Beavers would add a run in the fourth and fifth innings. Minot State scored twice in the sixth inning to make it 9-0.
The Trojans scored their lone run from Leon in the sixth inning, but the game ended in an eight-run mercy rule.
Ashley Stevenson went 2-for-3 for the Trojans. Jamie Becker had a single and a RBI. Amanda Stevenson and Malory Bartels added a single.
The Beavers hit seven doubles in the game. Janessa Penner, Lana DuBois and Deanne Mitchell each had two doubles. Kira Peturson added a double.
Novotny (7-12) took the loss for the Trojans. She pitched five innings. Novotny gave up seven runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Roth came in relief for one inning. She allowed two runs on three hits.
Mitchell (7-3) recorded the win for Minot State. She went five innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits. Shannon Murphy pitched one inning of relief.
The Trojans ended their 2009 campaign with a 17-28 overall record and a fourth place finish in the DAC Conference regular season standings.
