The Dakota State University softball team faced Black Hills State and earned a thrilling split in a make-up conference doubleheader at the Thue Softball Complex Monday. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Trojans in game one, 5-3, but the Trojans rallied back in the final inning in game two and won 3-2.

Game One

Black Hills State's Krista Gleiforst hit a 2-RBI single in first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead in the game.

Dakota State's Ashley Souphimdara hit a RBI single in the third inning to cut the deficit to 2-1.

In the sixth inning, Trojan Leigh Gramke hit a RBI double to deep right-center field to tie the game at 2.

However, the Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the seventh inning via a double by Danielle Briere and held on to a 5-3 win.

DSU's Jamie Becker went perfect behind the plate, going 2-for-2 with a run. Jayna Ackerman added a double for the Trojans.

For the Yellow Jackets, Danielle Briere went 2-for-4 scored a run. Kelli Graham and Maria Herber each added a single and a run.

Dakota Novotny (6-8) suffered the loss for the Trojans. She pitched a complete game, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits. Novotny struck out four batters and gave up five walks.

Jessica Clark tossed a complete game win for Black Hills State. She allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out six batters. She allowed one base on balls.

Game Two

The Trojans got on the board first due to in large part by control problems by Yellow Jacket's pitcher Katie Wagner. Wagner's control problems led to DSU loading the bases. Due to an errant pick-off attempt by Briere, Amanda Stevenson was able to score to give DSU the 1-0 lead. Jayna Ackerman also batted in Laura Shanafelt for a 2-0 advantage for the home squad.

The Yellow Jackets responded with Gleiforst's RBI single in the sixth inning and added a run in the top seventh inning to tie the game.

The Trojans opened the bottom of the 7th inning with Jamie Becker being hit by a pitch. Becker would be replaced by Huron freshman Mollie Merriam. Malory Bartels pitch-hit for Ackerman with no out.

The switch would work as Bartels laid done a successful bunt which not only allowed Merriam to score, but she reached first base safely by an error from Black Hills State. With one out in the seventh inning, Sylvia Leon hit the game-winning RBI single to right-center to score the Merriam for a 3-2 Trojans victory.

The win lifts the Trojans' overall record to 15-16 and 5-3 in the DAC. The Yellow Jackets fall to .500 (11-11) and 3-7 in the DAC.

Amanda Stevenson went 2-for-3 with two doubles for the Trojans. Ackerman and Souphimdara added a single each.

For Black Hills State, Herber had a triple and a RBI. Ashley Berg, Clark, and Gleiforst each had a single.

Kendra Roth (9-8) pitched another stellar complete game performance for the Trojans. She limited the Yellow Jackets to four hits and two runs (one earned). She struck out eight batters and allowed four walks.

Clark (5-4) took the loss for Black Hills State as she gave up the winning run in the seventh inning. Wagner pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed three runs on three hits. Karissa Norte pitched in relief in 2 1/3 innings and limited the Trojans to two hits.

The two teams will meet in a single non-conference game Tuesday (today) at the Thue Softball Complex. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.  The Trojans return on the road on Thursday to Sioux City to take on Briar Cliff for a doubleheader, starting at 5 p.m.
