The Trojan Softball team defeated Mayville State 3-of-4 games in the home DAC Conference weekend series in Madison at Thue Softball Complex. The Trojans split the doubleheader on Friday, 11-8 and 1-2. They swept the Comets on Saturday 4-0 and 2-1.
Game One - Friday
The Comets got on board with a quick 2-0 lead into third inning. After that the Trojans' offense turned on the heat, and scored a combined nine runs in three innings span. The Comets and Trojans each scored two runs in the sixth inning as the Trojans put 11-4 lead heading in the final inning. The Comets rallied and fell short as they extended their losing streak to 14 games.
The Trojans' offense attack was led by Ashley Souphimdara as she went perfect behind the plate (4-for-4). She recorded three runs, a walk and a RBI. Sylvia Leon and Leslie Neiman each had a double. Ashley Stevenson had two singles and three RBIs. Leigh Gramke, Laura Shanafelt, and Amanda Stevenson each had a single for the Trojans.
The Comets were led by Krista Hendricks as she went 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Caitlin Carley, Kristen Harsha, and Amanda Lara each had two singles.
The Trojans stole four bases compared to the Comets one. Ashley Stevenson, Amanda Stevenson, Neiman, and Souphmidara each recorded a stolen base.
Dakota Novotny notched her sixth win of the season for the Trojans. She pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs, four earned, on 10 hits. Kendra Roth came in relief and recorded her fourth save of the season. She gave up one run on one hit and struck out three batters in 2/3 innings.
Katie Rieu suffered the loss for the Comets. She went 3 1/3 innings and allowed six runs, two earned, on six hits. Carmel Ditlevson came in relief for 2 2/3 innings. She gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits and struck out two batters.
Game Two - Friday
For the second straight game, the Comets grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the game. The Trojans could not find the answer as they scored their lone run of the game in the fourth inning.
Comets' Morgan Bickell limited the Trojans to three hits in the game. She pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters.
Gramke went 2-for-3 and Amanda Stevenson recorded a single for the Trojans.
Amanda Morles had a double, single, and RBI for the Comets. Hendricks had three singles, Carley two singles, and Bickell one single to pace the Comets' offense.
Roth suffered the loss for the Trojans. She pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits and struck out four batters. She gave up four walks.
Game Three - Saturday
The Trojans started Roth and she gave a strong pitching performance. Roth limited the Comets to two hits in a complete-game shutout win. She struck out seven batters.
The Trojans' offense was led by Amanda Stevenson, going 2-for-3 with a run score and a RBI. Jayna Ackerman had a double. Souphimdara went 1-for-2 with two runs, a walk, and stole three bases. Leon, Ashley Stevenson, Gramke, and Neiman each had a single for the Trojans.
Jackie Fossum and Samantha Newman each had a single for the Comets.
Bickell took the loss for the Comets as she pitched a complete game. She allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out 10 batters.
Game Four - Saturday
The final game of the series featured a strong pitching duel between Comets' Bickell/ Rieu and Roth of DSU. The Comets scored once and their final run in the first inning. The Trojans rallied with a two-run fifth inning by Leon's 2-RBI double for a 2-1 win. Souphimdara and Neiman Leon scored off Leon's timely hit.
The win lifted the Trojans' overall record to 14-15 and 4-2 in DAC.
Leon went 2-for-3 with two doubles in the game for the Trojans. Amanda Stevenson went 2-for-3 with two singles.
The Comets were led by Carley with two singles and a run. Hendricks went 1-for-2 with a RBI. Morales had a single.
Roth (8-8) pitched a complete game and gave up one run on four hits. She struck out four batters.
Bickell (4-11) suffered the loss for the Comets. She pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on five hits. Rieu came in relief and limited the Trojans to one hit in 1 1/3 innings.
The Trojans will host Black Hills State Monday (today) in a make-up DAC Conference doubleheader. The first pitch will begin at 5 p.m. at the Thue Softball Complex.
