In the second game of the day the Trojans faced perennial GPAC power Midland Lutheran College (NE) losing 2-1 in a hard fought game that came down to execution late in the game. With the win Midland improves their record to 3-3.
In the third and final game of the day the Trojans faced the 2006 NAIA Region III runner-ups Dana College (NE). The Trojans won their first game of the year in what turned out to be a battle of near epic proportions as the teams traded the lead three times in the final two innings before the Trojans secured the win with a walk-off double in the eighth inning.
“In our team meeting last night we talked about just wanting to work on getting better with each game as we open the season and that is exactly what we did.†Stated head softball coach Ken Prorok. “In the first game we played about as bad as we possibly could, we made foolish mistakes in the field and our pitching staff issued too many walks. We came back and showed great improvement in the second game against a very good team. We got much better pitching and we hit the ball hard but made two mistakes on the bases that potentially cost us two runs which could have made the difference in the game. In the final game of the day versus another very good team in Dana we started to really put it all together we got solid pitching we had good hitting and we ran the bases well and anytime we can get all three aspects of the game in our favor we should win those games.â€
When asked about what Prorok said to his team at the end of a long but exciting day he offered these remarks; “I told our team that today was a good day for us we experienced pretty much everything we will encounter during a full season in one day. We had to bounce back from an embarrassing loss, we lost a game that we feel we should have won, we found ourselves in a game that we had the lead, lost that lead only to regain it and eventually win the game in extra innings. I am very happy with the way we responded today and expect to see more improvement tomorrow as we face two more tough tests in Hastings and Doaneâ€
The Trojans are in action again tomorrow as they face Hastings College (NE) at 12:00 and Dane College (NE) at 2:00.
