MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team will take on Tabor (Kan.) College at 11 a.m. (Central Time) Thursday in the opening round of the NAIA Baseball National Championships in the Hutchinson bracket. The five-team double elimination tournament takes place at Hobart-Detter Field in Hutchinson, Kan.
Dakota State, No. 5 seed in the bracket, will be making their debut in the national tournament's opening round. The Trojans finished as runner-up in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Baseball Postseason Tournament in San Marcos, Calif. DSU is currently 28-26 overall record, 25 wins improvement from a year ago.
Tabor, the tournament's host and No. 4 seed in the bracket, was the co-champions in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference after finishing their regular-season with a record of 41-13 overall and 21-7 in conference play.
Both teams met earlier in the season in Hillsboro, Kan. on March 9. The Bluejays recorded a doubleheader sweep over the Trojans by the scores of 8-4 and 13-6.
Two other games will be played during Thursday's opening round as No. 2 seed Judson (Ill.) (46-12, No. 17 in the NAIA Baseball national poll) takes on No. 3 seed Rogers State (Okla.) (42-14, No. 23 in the national poll) at 2:30 p.m. The winner of Dakota State vs. Tabor game will take on the top-seed Oklahoma Baptist (46-12, No. 7 in the NAIA national poll) at 6:30 p.m.
The championship game is slated to play on Saturday, May 12 at 6:30 p.m. If necessary, the second championship game is scheduled for Monday, May 14 at 1 p.m.
The winner of the tournament will join the host-team Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at the 56th Annual Avista-NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25-June 1.
