THIS WEEK:  Dakota State volleyball team (0-1 overall record) continues their busy action on the road with five matches scheduled this week.  The Trojans will make their second straight trip to Sioux City, Iowa Wednesday at Morningside (Iowa) (2-2).  There will be a junior varsity match at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m. at RVSC-Allee Gym.  On Friday and Saturday, DSU will play four matches in a two-day Corn Palace Classic event in Mitchell, S.D. 

CORN PALACE CLASSIC:  The Corn Palace Classic, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University, features six teams (host-team DWU, Dakota State (S.D.) York (Neb.), Valley City State (N.D.), Saint Mary (Neb.), and Clarke (Iowa). There will be six matches, starting at 10 a.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Trojans play York (Neb.) (0-0) at 2 p.m. and Clarke (Neb.) (0-0) at 6 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, DSU plays back-to-back matches, facing Saint Mary (Neb.) (0-1) at 5 p.m. and host-team DWU (1-3) at 7 p.m. All matches will be held in the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. LAST MEETING:  Morningside won the last meeting with Dakota State at DSU Fieldhouse on Aug. 29. The Mustangs won in four sets by the score of 22-25, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-17. Both York and DSU will be meeting for the first time at the Corn Palace on Friday afternoon. Clarke swept Dakota State in three straight sets (25-15, 25-20 and 25-16) at the Corn Palace last year on Sept. 7. The Trojans and the Flames split their season series last year. DSU won the first meeting at the Corn Palace on Sept. 8, 2012 in three straight sets (25-22, 25-18 and 25-18). Saint Mary won the second meeting on its own home court on Oct. 20. The Flames won the match in four sets—25-18, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-20. DSU and DWU split their season series last year with each team winning on the road. The Trojans defeated the Tigers in four sets at the Corn Palace on Sept. 8 (25-27, 28-26, 25-16 and 25-15). DWU bounced back in the second meeting of the season at the DSU Fieldhouse on Sept. 26, 2012 in a five-set thriller. Dakota Wesleyan won by the scores of 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 19-17.

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State dropped their season opener on the road on Aug. 24 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Trojans were swept by Briar Cliff (Iowa) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). The Chargers outhit DSU 50-15 to earn a 3-0 match victory over DSU (25-14, 25-12 and 25-13).

DSU JUNIOR VARSITY GOES 3-1 TO OPEN SEASON:  The Dakota State University junior varsity program kicked off the season at the Ridgewater (Minn.) College Volleyball Tournament in Willmar on Aug. 24-25. The Trojans went 3-1 in the tournament, defeating North Dakota School of Science 3-2, Ellsworth (Iowa) 3-1 and Central Lakes (Minn.) 3-2. DSU suffered its only loss in the tournament to the host-team Ridgewater 3-0.

BUSY SCHEDULE:  The Trojans kicked off their busy volleyball schedule with 12 matches in 18 days. Dakota State dropped their first match of the season at Briar Cliff (Iowa) of the GPAC. DSU will be making their second straight trip to Sioux City Wednesday, visiting another GPAC foe—Morningside (Iowa). It's the second trip to Sioux City in five days for Dakota State. DSU plays four matches in the Corn Palace Classic next weekend (Aug. 30-31) and returns home on Sept. 3 versus Briar Cliff. On Sept. 4, the Trojans travel to Yankton, S.D. to take on their in-state rival Mount Marty. On the weekend of Sept. 6-7, DSU heads to Hastings (Neb.) to play four matches in the Hastings Classic. The Trojans play four Nebraska schools, including three from the GPAC conference.

RECORDS WATCH: Stacey Schuller is currently third in the Trojan Volleyball record book for most career set assists. She recorded 2,445 assists through her first two season at Dakota State. Jill Weisser currently holds the DSU school record with 3,150 career assists from 2000-04. Schuller amassed a total of 1,353 assists (26 matches) in 2011 and 1,087 assists (22 matches) in 2012.

TEAM LEADERS: Kelci Viesselman leads the Trojans in two different categories. She leads the team with five kills (1.7 kills per set) and three blocks (1.0 blocks per set). Viesselman ranks 43rd in the nation in blocks per game. Stacey Schuller produces five set assists. Chelsey Davis records eight digs (4.0 digs per set). Caitlin Pick and Kaylee Vander Wal lead the team with one service ace.

COACHES' CORNER:  Amy Veenhof enters her fifth season as head coach at Dakota State.  She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes.  Her teams had been named to NAIA Scholar Team three times.  Megan Kusler is in her second season as an assistant coach.  Tom Mettler enters his first year as a student assistant coach.

UP NEXT:  Dakota State returns home for the first time on Tuesday, Sept. 3.  The Trojans welcome Briar Cliff (Iowa) for their second meeting of the season.  There will be a junior varsity match at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be at the DSU Fieldhouse.  DSU heads back on the road Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Mount Marty (S.D.) in Yankton.  Junior varsity match starts followed by the varsity match at 7:30 p.m. at the Cimpl Arena.  On Sept. 6-7, Dakota State travels to Hastings, Neb. to play in the Hastings (Neb.) Classic.  The Trojans will play a total of four matches in the tournament, with two matches each on Friday and Saturday.
