THIS WEEK: Dakota State (11-13 overall record. 2-2 Association of Independent Institutions record) returns back home at DSU Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon as they host Jamestown (N.D.) (17-4, 6-1 A.I.I.). The battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference foes is set for 3 p.m.
JOHNSON & WALES (COLO.) TOURNAMENT RECAP: Dakota State went 2-1 in the Johnson & Wales (Colo.) volleyball tournament last weekend in Denver. The Trojans dropped their first match of the tournament in three straight sets versus Sterling (Kan.) on Oct. 5 by the scores of 28-26, 25-15 and 25-11. DSU bounced back in the winning column on Oct. 6. Dakota State defeated the host-team Johnson & Wales 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 17-25 and 25-12) in an A.I.I. match. The Trojans concluded the tournament with a 3-0 victory (25-23, 25-18 and 28-26) over Southwest (N.M.). Kristen DiPaola led the tournament with 49 kills in three matches (4.9 kills per set). Katie Green was the leader in the tournament's defense with 66 digs (6.6 digs per set).
ON TARGET: Through two seasons at Dakota State, Kristen DiPaola (senior, outside hitter, Trinidad, Colo.) amasses a total of 964 career kills . She needs 36 kills to join the Trojans' 1000-career kills club. The last DSU volleyball player that had reached 1000-career kills club was Stephanie Kruggel on Oct. 22, 2011 in a 3-1 home match victory versus Oklahoma Wesleyan.
KDLT-TV SPORTS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kristen DiPaola was featured as KDLT-TV Sports Athlete of the Week on Oct. 8. KDLT-TV Sports' Nick Lenz did a story/video of DiPaola for her stellar career at Dakota State University. She currently leads the nation in most kills with 473 and also kills per set with 5.2. SCHULLER IN TOP 3 CAREER ASSISTS: Sophomore Stacey Schuller (setter, Jackson, Minn.) is currently third in DSU volleyball record book for most career set assists. She records a total of 2217 career assists. Jill Weisser holds the DSU school record for most career assists with 3150 from 2000-2004. Katalin Varga is second with 2904 assists from 1994-1998.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: Dakota State dropped remains at No. 7 in the latest edition of the independent weekly rankings, released Monday afternoon. The rankings are used to determine the teams to qualify for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) post-season tournament in November. The rankings are (overall record): 1) Cal State San Marcos (18-8); 2) Jamestown (N.D.) (17-4); 3) Ashford (Iowa) (14-13); 4) Mayville State (N.D.) (19-8); 5) La Sierra (Calif.) (15-8); 6) Valley City State (N.D.) (8-18); 7) Dakota State (S.D.) (11-13) and 8) Rochester (Mich.) (13-14).
A.I.I. INDEPENDENT VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT: The Association of Independent Volleyball Conference Tournament will be hosted by Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 9-10. The tournament will start with a pool play format on Nov. 9 with top two teams in each pool advancing to the single-elimination tournament and championship match on Nov. 10.
DSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday, Dakota State ranks 20th in the nation in total digs (1501). The Trojans are 28th in total kills (1082) and 40th in total assists (940). Kristen DiPaola leads the NAIA in total kills with 473 and kills per set (5.2). Stacey Schuller ranks 15th in the nation in total assists (864) and 41st in assists per set (9.5). Katie Green is 26th in the nation in total digs with 406.
TROJANS QUICK LEADERS: Kristen DiPaola leads DSU with 24 service aces (0.3 aces per set). She amasses a total of 473 kills this season (5.2 kills per set). Stacey Schuller produces 864 set assists (9.5 assists per set). Katie Green leads DSU's defense with 406 digs (4.5 digs per set). Taylor Mosco have a total of 64 blocks (0.7 blocks per set) for the Trojans.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State went 2-1 in the Johnson & Wales (Colo.) volleyball tournament last weekend in Denver. Jamestown was 2-1 last week with all matches on the road. The Jimmies defeated Mayville State (N.D.) in three straight sets by the scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-19 on Oct. 3. Jamestown defeated Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Oct. 5 in four sets (23-25, 25-5, 25-18 and 25-20). Northwestern (Iowa) ended Jimmies' five-match winning streak on Oct. 6 in Orange City. The Red Raiders defeated JC in four sets by the scores of 25-23, 16-25, 25-23 and 27-25.
LAST MEETING: Jamestown swept the season series with Dakota State in 2010 in both teams' last meetings. The Jimmies defeated the Trojans in three straight sets in Jamestown, N.D. on Oct. 22, 2012 by the scores of 25-14, 25-11 and 25-18. In both teams' last meeting at the DSU Fieldhouse on Sept. 25, 2010, JC defeated Dakota State in four sets, where each set was decided by two points (23-25, 25-23, 28-26 and 27-25).
FINAL DSU HOME MATCH: Dakota State will play their final home regular-season volleyball match on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans welcome Presentation (S.D.) with the first serve starting at 7 p.m. Three seniorsâ€”Kristen DiPaola, Katie Green and Taylor Moscoâ€”will be recognized prior to the match.
REMAINING DSU VOLLEYBALL SCHEDULE: Dakota State plays their final five matches on the road in October. The Trojans play the final opponent from the Great Plains Athletic Conference on Oct. 19 at Midland (Neb.) in Fremont, Neb. On Oct. 20, DSU travels to Omaha, Neb. to play Saint Mary (Neb.). Dakota State heads to North Dakota for three matches on the last weekend of October. The Trojans play in a triangular with Valley City State (N.D.) and host-team Jamestown (N.D.) on Oct. 26 in Jamestown, N.D. Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule with a match-up at Mayville State (N.D.) on Oct. 27.
