MADISON, S.D. - Four matches went to four sets Saturday in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree at the DSU Fieldhouse. Ashford (Iowa) and South Dakota Mines recorded back-to-back match victories were the highlights in the second day of the two-day event. Jamestown (N.D.) and Mayville State (N.D.) each recorded a win, while Dakota State and Valley City State (N.D.) each dropped two matches.
Ashford kicked off the day with a four-set victory over Jamestown by the scores of 25-11, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-22. The Saints recorded 12 team blocks compared to the Jimmies' three blocks. AU recorded a hitting percentage of .220, while JC was held to a .061 hitting efficiency.
Ashford finished the jamboree with a 3-1 record after defeating Valley City State in four sets in the second match of the day (25-17, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-18). The Saints hit .237 in the match with 46 attacks and 10 errors in 132 attempts. The Vikings had 51 kills, but committed 37 attack errors in 161 with a hitting percentage of .087 in the loss.
Jamestown bounced back in the third match of the day as they defeated Mayville State in four sets (25-13, 20-25, 25-14 and 25-17). The Jimmies outhit the Comets 64-47 in the match. JC recorded a hitting percentage of .331 compared to Mayville State's .198.
South Dakota Mines (NCAA Division II independent member) recorded back-to-back victories with three-straight sets sweep over former Dakota Athletic Conference foes - Dakota State and Valley City State.
The Hardrockers hit .404 (43 kills with seven errors in 89 attempts) compared to the Trojans' .157 hitting percentage (35 kills with 19 errors in 102 attempts). SDM swept DSU by the scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-21.
South Dakota Mines defeated the Vikings by the scores of 25-13, 25-21 and 25-14. The Hardrockers had 36 kills in the match (.302 hitting percentage), while the Vikings had 30 attacks. VCSU suffered 23 attack errors (.073 hitting percentage) in the match.
Mayville State won the final match of the jamboree over Dakota State in four sets. The Comets defeated the Trojans by the score of 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-16. Kristen DiPaola of DSU smashed 30 attacks in the match. Mayville State had a hitting percentage of .267 (60 kills and 17 errors in 161 attempts) compared to DSU's .208 (63 kills with 27 errors in 173 attempts).
DSU's DiPaola led the jamboree with 90 kills (6.0 kills per set). According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website, she currently tops in the nation with the most kills (314) and kills per set (5.1) for the Trojans.
Stacey Schuller of Dakota State and Laura Kolness each recorded 151 set assists in the two-day event.
Ashford's Danielle Tombolato led the jamboree with eight service aces.
Morgan Martells of Ashford had 21 total blocks in the jamboree. She recorded two solo blocks and 19 block assists. Martells averaged 1.3 blocks per set.
Jamestown's Katie Lee led the jamboree in defense with 110 digs. She averaged 6.9 digs per set in the jamboree.
