MADISON, S.D. - Dakota State faced two former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foes Saturday in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans dropped in three straight sets to South Dakota Mines (NCAA Division II independent member) by the scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-21. The Trojans fell short in the night cap, losing to Mayville State (member of the Association of Independent Institutions) in four sets - 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 and 25-16.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 8-10 and 1-2 in the A.I.I.
South Dakota Mines 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 - BOX SCORE
There were a total of 17 ties in the opening set between the Hardrockers and the Trojans. At 22-22, South Dakota Mines sealed the first-set victory with a 3-1 run (25-22).
SDM won the second set by the score of 25-14 to earn a 2-0 match lead. The Hardrockers recorded a hitting percentage of .346 in the second set compared to the Trojans' .030.
With DSU leading 10-7 in the third set, South Dakota Mines used a 12-2 scoring run to gain a 19-12 lead. The Trojans trimmed their deficit to 23-19. SDM sealed the match victory with a 25-21 third set win.
Kristen DiPaola recorded 19 attacks in the match for Dakota State. Allison Thielsen added five kills. Stacey Schuller had 23 set assists.
Mandi Atkins led the Trojans' defense with 13 digs. Taylor Mosco had four service aces.
Janelle Strampe and Jean Kreuzer each had 11 kills for South Dakota Mines. Justine Blade added nine attacks. Carsyn Garcia had 40 assists.
Strampe and Hannah Glocke each had nine digs. Blade had four block assists.
South Dakota Mines recorded a hitting percentage of .404 in the match with 43 kills and seven errors in 89 attempts. DSU had 35 kills with 19 errors in 102 attempts for a hitting efficiency of .157.
Mayville State (N.D.) 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 1 - BOX SCORE
Eighteen ties were featured in the first set in the final match of the Independent Volleyball Jamboree. At 22-22, Mayville State scored the final three points for a 25-22 win and earned a 1-0 match lead.
Trailing at 5-0 in the second set, DSU answered with a 13-5 run to gain a 13-10 lead. The Trojans secured the second set with a 25-23 win to tie the match at 1-1.
The Comets won the third set by the score of 25-23 for a 2-1 match lead.
Mayville State jumped to a 19-8 lead in the fourth set. The Trojans could get no closer than eight points on two occasions (22-14 and 24-16) as the Comets secured the match 3-1 with a 25-16 fourth set victory.
DiPaola smashed 30 kills in the match for Dakota State - her second time this year that she recorded 30 attacks in a match (at Mount Marty on Sept. 4, 2012 in Yankton, S.D.). Mosco added 14 kills. Thielsen had 10 attacks. Schuller recorded 51 assists.
Atkins led the Trojans with a match-high 25 digs. DiPaola added 19 digs. Katie Green and Thielsen each had 13 digs.
Four players recorded in double digits kills for the Comets. Josette Glatt had 16 kills. Remington Werner had 11 kills. Maggie Maroney and Brittany Olson each had 10 attacks. Laura Kolness produced 46 assists.
Kolness had 20 digs for the Comets. Ashley Torgusson added 17 digs. Maroney and Betsy Smith each had 13 digs.
DSU outhit the Comets 63-60 in kills. The Trojans committed 27 attacks errors (.208 hitting percentage), while Mayville State hit .267 (17 attack errors).
Mayville State had eight blocks in the match compared to DSU two blocks.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Wednesday night. The Trojans conclude their seven-match home stand against in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
