MADISON, S.D. - The first day action of the Independent Volleyball Jamboree - hosted by Dakota State University - is in the book. The highlights of the day were two matches that went to five-set thriller, along with Jamestown (N.D.) coming out undefeated in two matches in the first day of the two-day event at the DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State went 1-1.
Five Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) members - DSU, Ashford (Iowa), Jamestown, Mayville State (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) - and an NCAA Division II independent school - South Dakota Mines met at the DSU Fieldhouse to play in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree.
The jamboree kicks off with the Trojans recording a five-set thriller over Ashford, a newcomer to the A.I.I. DSU recorded a 3-2 match victory by the scores of 16-25, 25-20, 12-25, 25-23 and 15-12. The Trojans outhit the Saints 51-47 in the match.
Mayville State won the second match of the day. The Comets recorded a four-set victory over South Dakota Mines (23-25, 25-18, 25-15 and 25-18). The Hardrockers recorded 56 attacks in the match, but committed 27 attack errors and 11 service errors in the loss. Mayville State had 53 kills and a killing percentage of .289 and .979 service percentage in the victory.
In the third match of the day, Jamestown swept their rival Valley City State in three straight sets. The Jimmies recorded the scores of 25-23, 25-11 and 25-23. The Vikings were held to a .011 hitting percentage in the match, while JC had .286 hitting percentage.
Ashford notched their first win in the jamboree with a three straight set victory (25-19, 25-20 and 25-13) over Mayville State in the fourth match. The Saints had 46 kills the match compared to the Comets' 31 attacks. MSU was held to .093 hitting percentage while AU had a hitting efficiency of .256.
Jamestown rallied back from 2-1 deficit to earn a 3-2 thrilling win (26-28, 25-21, 13-25, 25-20 and 18-16) over South Dakota Mines in the first match of the night cap. The Jimmies saved two match points from the Hardrockers and scored the final three points of the match. SDM had 75 kills compared to the Jimmies' 63. The Hardrockers had 105 digs, while JC had 100 digs. The Jimmies had 10 blocks in the match compared to the Hardrockers' six blocks.
Valley City State concluded the first day jamboree with a 3-0 victory (29-27, 25-20 and 25-21) over Dakota State. The Vikings recorded a hitting percentage of .325 compared to the Trojans' .296.
Kristen DiPaola of Dakota State led the first day with an overall of 41 attacks (5.1 kills per set) in the jamboree. DSU's Stacey Schuller records 77 set assists (9.6 assists per set). Caitlin Foran of Ashford and Neufeld Anna of Valley City State lead the jamboree with four service aces. AU's Amanda West records nine blocks in two matches. Katie Lee of Jamestown leads in digs with 55 after first day of the jamboree.
The Independent Volleyball Jamboree concludes tomorrow. First match starts at 9 p.m. between Jamestown and Ashford. The jamboree concludes with DSU and Mayville State at 7 p.m.
