THIS WEEK: Six independent schools will compete in the upcoming Independent Volleyball Jamboree this weekend at the DSU Fieldhouse. The two-day event is hosted by Dakota State University. Five members from the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) and an NCAA Division II independent school will participate in the jamboree. The jamboree kicks off on Friday morning at 10 a.m. between DSU (7-7 overall record, 0-0 A.I.I.) and Ashford (Iowa) (10-6, 1-0 A.I.I.).
TEAMS AND SCHEDULE: The participating teams in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree are host-team Dakota State (S.D.), Ashford (Iowa), Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), South Dakota Mines and Valley City State (S.D.). Ashford is a newcomer to the A.I.I. conference this year. South Dakota Mines is a member of the NCAA Division II independent school. The jamboree starts on Friday at 10 a.m. between DSU and Ashford, followed by Mayville State versus South Dakota Mines at 12 noon, Valley City State versus Jamestown at 2 p.m., Ashford versus Mayville State at 4 p.m., South Dakota Mines versus Jamestown at 6 p.m. and concludes the first day with DSU welcoming Valley City State in the night cap at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Jamestown and Ashford kick off at 9 a.m. Ashford will play Valley City State at 11 a.m., followed by Mayville State versus Jamestown at 1 p.m., Dakota State versus South Dakota Mines at 3 p.m., Valley City State versus South Dakota Mines at 5 p.m. and Dakota State versus Mayville State at 7 p.m.
HOME COOKING: After dropping the first three home matches of the season, Dakota State had won the last three home matches at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans kicked off their current seven-match home stand with a sweep over Concordia (Neb.) 3-0 (26-24, 25-23 and 25-16) on Sept. 15. DSU remained undefeated in the current home stand on Sept. 17 as the Trojans sweep the season series with in-state rival Mount Marty 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 25-20 and 26-24). Dakota State concludes their seven-match home stand on Sept. 26 as they host Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in DSU homecoming's volleyball match.
SUCCESSFUL WEEK: The Dakota State volleyball team had a successful week last week. The Trojans played four matches in seven days and finished with a 3-1 record. DSU swept Presentation (S.D.) on Sept. 11 3-0 ( 25-15, 25-23 and 25-16) before falling to Briar Cliff (Iowa) 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 17-25 and 25-16) on Sept. 13. The Trojans defeated a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference members at homeâ€”a 3-0 victory over Concordia (Neb.) and a 3-1 win over Mount Marty. With the win over the Lancers on Sept. 17, the Trojans moved to .500 (7-7 overall record) for the first time this season.
A.I.I. INDEPENDENT VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT: The Association of Independent Volleyball Conference Tournament will be hosted by Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D. on Nov. 9-10. The tournament will start with a pool play format on Nov. 9 with top two teams in each pool advancing to the single-elimination tournament on Nov. 10.
REGIONALLY SPEAKING: Dakota State remains at No. 6 spot in the latest edition of the independent weekly rankings. The rankings are used to determine for teams to qualify for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) post-season tournament in November. The rankings are (overall record): 1) Cal State San Marcos (13-7); 2) La Sierra (Calif.) (14-6); 3) Jamestown (N.D.) (9-2); 4) Mayville State (13-4); 5) Ashford (Iowa) (10-5); 6) Dakota State (S.D.) (6-7); 7) Valley City State (N.D.) (4-12) and 8) Rochester (Mich.) (7-11).
DIPAOLA TOPS IN NATION: Kristen DiPaola ranks first in the nation in kills per set with an average of 5.1, according to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website. She is sixth in the nation in total attacks with 273, which she is currently leads the category in the Association of Independent Institutions conference.
DSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Thursday, Dakota State ranks 49th in the nation in digs per set (16.4) and total digs (887). Stacey Schuller ranks 31st in the nation in total assists with 504. She averages 9.3 assists per set, which is 43rd in the nation. Katie Green is 46th in the nation in total digs of 252.
TROJANS QUICK LEADERS: Katie Green leads DSU with 16 service aces (0.3 aces per set). She amasses a total of 252 digs (4.7 digs per set) for the Trojans' defense. Kristen DiPaola leads the DSU's offensive attack with 273 kills this season (5.1 kills per set). Stacey Schuller produces 504 set assists (9.3 assists per set). Taylor Mosco leads DSU in blocks with 46 (0.9 blocks per set).

First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse. DSU travels to Morris, Minn. on Saturday, Sept. 29 as they compete in the Minnesota-Morris triangular against a pair of Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) foes. The Trojans face Northland (Wis.) at 1 p.m. and conclude the triangular against the host-team Minnesota-Morris at 3 p.m. All matches will be held at the Physical Education Center.
