MITCHELL, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team traveled to the Corn Palace to play in the two-day Corn Palace Classic, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University. The Trojans dropped two matches in three straight sets Friday.
Dakota State's overall record stands at 2-6 after the first day completion in the Corn Palace Classic.
South Dakota Mines 3, Dakota State (S.D.) 0 - BOX SCORE
South Dakota Mines, an NCAA Division II school, won the battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foes with a 3-0 match victory over the Trojans.
The Hardrockers recorded a .455 hitting percentage (10 kills - 0 errors - 22 attempts) to gain a 25-13 first set victory. DSU had nine kills with 10 errors in 30 attempts (minus 0.033 hitting percentage).
Dakota State had 17 kills in the second set, but dropped a 25-22 decision to give SDM a 2-0 match lead. The Hardrockers recorded a killing efficiency of .278 with three errors compared to DSU's .250 hitting percentage with six attack errors.
South Dakota Mines won the third set by the score of 25-20. SDM had 15 kills compared to the Trojans' 13 in the third set.
Kristen DiPaola had a match-high of 15 kills for the Trojans. Allison Thielsen added nine attacks and three service aces. Stacey Schuller had 28 set assists.
Katie Green led DSU's defense with 15 digs. Mandi Atkins added 11 digs. Taylor Mosco and DiPaola each had a solo block.
Justine Blade had 13 kills for South Dakota Mines. Janelle Strampe added 11 kills and 13 digs. Carsyn Garcia produced 36 set assists.
Garcia and Rachel Pekarek each had 10 digs for SDM.
South Dakota Mines recorded a .295 hitting percentage. The Hardrockers had 38 kills and committed seven attack errors in 105 attempts. DSU smashed a total of 39 kills with a hitting efficiency of .148. The Trojans had 22 attack errors in 115 attack attempts.
DSU had 55 digs in the match compared to SDM 50 digs. The Trojans had five service aces while the Hardrockers recorded three service aces.
South Dakota Mines had five blocks the match compared to DSU's two blocks.
Both teams will meet again in two weeks as they compete in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree in Madison, S.D.

Clarke (Iowa) outhit the Trojans 49-33 in the match to win in three straight sets in the night cap.
The Crusaders used a .545 hitting percentage (18 kills - 0 errors - 33 attempts) to earn a 1-0 match lead with a 25-15 first set win. Dakota State had 14 kills with one attack error in 35 attempts (.371 killing percentage).
The Trojans fell short in the second set where Clarke grabbed a 25-20 victory for a 2-0 match lead.
DSU was held to .088 hitting efficiency in the third set as the Crusaders secured the match with a 25-16 third set win.
DiPaola smashed 13 kills for the Trojans. Mosco added eight attacks and a killing percentage of .368. Schuller had 24 assists.
Green led the Trojans' defense with 14 digs.
Elle Kosciuk had 15 kills for the Crusaders. Melissa Dever added 12 kills. Corrin Larkin recorded 40 assists.
Molly Bender had 26 digs for Clarke.
Clarke outhit DSU in killing percentage - .360 to .198 - in the match.
Dakota State continues their action in the second day of the Corn Palace Classic Saturday. The Trojans face Saint Mary (Neb.) at 4 p.m. and host-team Dakota Wesleyan in the night cap at 6 p.m. The matches will be held at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
