THIS WEEK: The Dakota State (2-4 overall record) volleyball team looks to extend their winning streak with four matches scheduled at the Corn Palace Classic this weekend. The Trojans are scheduled to play their first match of the classic on Friday at 12 noon versus South Dakota Mines (2-4) in the battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference members.
CORN PALACE CLASSIC: The Corn Palace Classic, hosted by Dakota Wesleyan University, features six teams from the Midwest. Each team is schedule to play four matches in the classic. The teams participating in the classic are Clarke (Iowa), Dakota State, Dakota Wesleyan (2-7 overall record), Saint Mary (Neb.) (1-6), South Dakota Mines and Valley City State (N.D.) (1-7). The Trojans are slated to face South Dakota Mines at 12 p.m. and Clarke at 6 p.m. on Friday. LAST MEETING: South Dakota Mines, member of NCAA Division II, swept the season series with DSU last season. The last time Dakota State defeated the Hardrockers was on Oct. 15, 2010 in Rapid City, S.D. where the Trojans won in three straight sets. DSU met with Clarke (Iowa) in the Ashford (Iowa) Tournament on Oct. 6, 2007 in both teams' last meeting. Dakota State prevailed in four sets by the score of 30-27, 30-26, 30-32 and 30-25. DSU won the last meeting with Saint Mary (Neb.) on Aug. 27, 2011 in the Grand View Tournament. The Trojans defeated the Flames in four sets (25-17, 25-18, 21-25 and 25-20). Dakota State had won the last three meetings with in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan, including a season series sweep last season. The last two meetings were decided in the fifth set, which both were won by Dakota State. In the last meeting held at the Corn Palace on Sept. 3, 2011, the Trojans won by the score of 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-10. DSU defeated DWU on Oct. 19, 2011 in a five-set thrillerâ€”19-25, 25-10, 23-25, 25-21 and 18-16.
LAST TIME OUT: After dropping the first four matches of the season, Dakota State had won two straight matchesâ€”both matches were decided in the fifth set. The Trojans defeated Peru State (Neb.) on Sept. 1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 20-25 and 17-15). Dakota State won their first road match of the season on Sept. 4, defeating in-state rival Mount Marty (25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-8). Clarke (Iowa) dropped their third straight match on Sept. 5, losing to Waldorf (Iowa) in five sets (22-25, 29-31, 25-19, 25-19 and 15-2). Saint Mary (Neb.) dropped the last two matches against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conferenceâ€”Hastings (Neb.) and Doane (Neb.). Dakota Wesleyan lost to in-state rival University of Sioux Falls on Sept. 5 in Sioux Falls, S.D. by the score of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-19.
DIPAOLA RACKS UP ATTACKS: Kristen DiPaola was one kill short to tie the DSU school record for most kills in a single match on Sept. 4 at Mount Marty. She recorded 30 kills in DSU's 3-2 thriller over the Lancers in the Cimpl Arena. She currently holds the school record of 31 kills in a single match, which was happened at the same arena at Mount Marty (Sept. 20, 2011).
1000-DIG CLUB: Senior Katie Green had surpassed 1000th career dig in her four-year career at Dakota State. She recorded her 1000th dig in DSU's 3-2 victory thriller at Mount Marty on Sept. 4. Green had 25 digs in the win. She currently have 1018 digs during her career at DSU.
INDEPENDENT VOLLEYBALL JAMBOREE: Six independent schools will play in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree at DSU Fieldhouse on the weekend of Sept. 21-22. Teams included in the jamboree are host-team Dakota State, Ashford (Iowa), Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), South Dakota Mines and Valley City State (N.D.). The jamboree hits off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 22 with six matches scheduled on each day.
DSU IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website, Dakota State ranks 38th in the nation in digs per set (16.8). Kristen DiPaola ranks fifth in the nation in kills per set (4.4), which she leads the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) in kills per set. Katie Green is 31st in the nation in digs per set with an average of 5.1 digs.
TROJANS QUICK LEADERS: Mandi Atkins leads DSU in service aces with six. Kristen DiPaola records 118 attacks this season (4.4 kills per set). Stacey Schuller have 235 set assists (8.7 assists per set). Katie Green leads the Trojans' defense with 137 digs (5.1 digs per set). Taylor Mosco have 21 blocks (0.8 blocks per set).
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fourth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Megan Kusler is in her first season as an assistant coach.
