YANKTON, S.D. - Dakota State smashed 64 kills Tuesday evening as the Trojans posted their second-straight five-set thriller victory, defeating in-state rival Mount Marty (25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 21-25 and 15-8) at the Cimpl Arena. DSU won their seventh straight meeting versus the Lancers.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 2-4 and recorded their first win against a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. It was the fourth match this season that DSU had went to five sets. Mount Marty suffered their fifth straight defeat after winning the season opener on Aug. 28 (1-5 overall record).
DSU raced to their largest lead at 18-6 in the opening set. The Lancers was able to get no closer than five points (24-19) as the Trojans secured the first set victory by the score of 25-19. Dakota State recorded a killing efficiency of .219 compared to the Lancers' .100.
Mount Marty grabbed a 20-14 lead in the second set. The Trojans used a 6-1 scoring run to trim their deficit at 21-20. The Lancers closed the second set by the score of 25-22 to earn a 1-1 match tie.
With the third set score tied at 11-11, Dakota State used a 9-3 run to take a 20-14 lead. The Trojans took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-19 third set victory.
Both teams went through seven ties in the early going in the fourth set. At 12-12, MMC scored five consecutive points to gain a five-point lead at 17-12. The Lancers won the fourth set by the score of 25-21 to force a decisive fifth set. The Trojans had 15 kills, but committed 12 attack errors. Mount Marty had a killing percentage of .286 (10 kills with two errors in 28 attempts).
Dakota State used a fast start in the fifth set, earning a 10-5 lead. The Trojans secured the match with a 5-3 closing run for a 3-2 match victory. MMC was held to negative .050 killing percentage, while DSU recorded a .263 killing efficiency.
Kristen DiPaola amassed 30 kills in the match - second most kills in a match in the Trojan Volleyball school record book - for DSU (she currently holds the DSU school record of 31 kills happened in the same arena last season on Sept. 20, 2011). Taylor Mosco added 15 attacks. Caitlin Pick had nine kills. Stacey Schuller produced 49 set assists.
Katie Green led the Trojans' defense with 25 digs. Allison Thielsen added 18 digs. DiPaola had 10 digs.
Mosco had 3.5 blocks - one block solo and five block assists - and two service aces for Dakota State. Pick added 2.5 blocks - two block solos and one block assist.
For Mount Marty, Amanda Dirksen and Kate Lingscheit each had 12 kills. Sadie Fedor had eight kills. Caitlyn Illg had 24 assists. Tina Rowbotham added 19 assists.
Dirksen had 14 digs for the Lancers. Courtney Miller recorded 11 digs. Illg recorded two service aces.
Lexi Branson had 3.5 blocks for MMC. Lingscheit added three blocks.
Dakota State outhit the Lancers 64-49. The Trojans had a hitting percentage of .181 compared to MMC .153.
DSU had a serving percentage of .944 while Mount Marty committed 11 serving errors (.887 serving percentage).
Both teams had 10 blocks in the match.
Dakota State looks to extend their winning streak this weekend as they play in the two-day Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell, S.D. The Trojans kick off the classic Friday at noon with a match-up with NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines in a battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference foes. DSU plays the second match of the day Friday evening at 6 p.m. versus Clarke (Iowa).
