MADISON, S.D. - Dakota State faced their third straight opponent from the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Wednesday night, hosting Morningside (Iowa) at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans won the first set, but could not complete a comeback as the Mustangs took the next three sets for a 3-1 victory.
Dakota State remained winless in first three matches of the 2012 season. Morningside won their fifth straight match to open their 2012 season.
A total of 10 ties featured in the opening set. Dakota State recorded a killing percentage of .208 with 16 kills to take the first set victory (25-22). Morningside had a killing efficiency of .000 (nine kills with nine errors).
At 20-20 tie in the second set, the Mustangs closed the set with a 5-2 scoring run to earn a 25-22 win to even the match at 1-1.
The Trojans jumped to a 12-7 lead in the third set. Morningside scored 16 straight points to overtake a 23-12 lead. The Mustangs secured the third set by the score of 25-14 to grab a 2-1 match lead.
MC started the fourth set by scoring six consecutive points. The Trojans could get no closer than 11-6 as the Mustangs secured the match by winning the fourth set (25-17).
Kristen DiPaola led the Trojans with 16 kills and 10 digs. Caitlin Pick added 12 kills. Taylor Mosco recorded eight kills and nine digs. Stacey Schuller produced 34 set assists.
Mandi Atkins had three service aces for DSU. Katie Green had 10 digs.
Maggie Vondrak and Gabi French each had 10 kills for Morningside. Melissa Mounts had 21 set assists and recorded six service aces. Hannah Roberg added 13 assists.
Lexi Welsh led the Mustangs' defense with 24 digs. Vondrak added 15 digs.
The Trojans had a slim advantage in kills, outhitting MC 49-48. The Mustangs had a killing percentage of .222 compared to the Trojans' .172.
Dakota State struggled at the serving line, committing 14 service errors. MC had a serving percentage of .969, while DSU recorded a .823 serving percentage.
Morningside had 79 digs compared to the Trojans' 58 digs.
DSU continues their home stand on Saturday as they host a triangular. The Trojans welcome Waldorf (Iowa) at 2 p.m., followed by Peru State (Neb.)-Waldorf. Dakota State hosts Peru State in the nightcap at 6 p.m. All matches will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse.
