MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team kicked off their 2012 campaign Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, hosting Briar Cliff (Iowa) from the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Trojans jumped to a 2-0 set lead, but the Chargers rallied back in the final three sets to take a 3-2 match victory. The Chargers won by the score of 24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 25-13 and 15-8.
Briar Cliff jumped to the largest lead in the first set at 13-8. With BC leading at 24-21, the Trojans stormed back with five consecutive points to take the first set victory (26-24).
The Chargers led at 14-11 in the second set. Dakota State closed out with a 14-4 scoring run to take the 25-18 second set win for a 2-0 match lead.
DSU led 13-11 in the third set. The Chargers scored six straight points to overtake the lead at 17-13. The Trojans were able get no closer than one point (24-23), but Briar Cliff secured the third set (25-23) to extend the match.
The Chargers scored seven straight points to open the fourth set. Briar Cliff recorded a .303 hitting percentage to earn a 25-13 fourth set victory to even the match at 2-2.
Dakota State scored its first point of the fifth set. The Chargers used a 10-3 run to grab a 10-4 lead and secured the match by the score of 15-8.
A total of 24 ties were recorded in the match.
Kristen DiPaola led the Trojans' offense with 22 kills. She added 13 digs. Taylor Mosco recorded 10 kills and 14 digs. Stacey Schuller had 39 set assists and 11 digs.
Katie Green had two service aces and 19 digs for DSU. Allison Thielsen added 16 digs. Mandi Atkins had 13 digs.
For Briar Cliff, Kally Iedema had 15 kills, 17 digs and two service aces. Brooke Maguire added nine kills. Erin Frank recorded 28 set assists and 12 digs.
Lindsey Jardine led BC's defense with 26 digs. Monica Boeding had two service aces and 12 digs. Amy Frank added 11 digs.
BC had a killing percentage of .083 compared to the Trojans' .045. The Chargers had a slim margin over DSU in kills (48-46).
Briar Cliff recorded eight blocks in the match, while the Trojans had six blocks.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they head on the road Tuesday night. The Trojans head to Orange City, Iowa to take another foe from the GPAC - Northwestern (Iowa). First serve is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Bultman Center.
