THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University volleyball kicks off their 2012 season Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans host Briar Cliff of the Great Plains Athletic Conference in both teams' season opener. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
LAST MEETING: Both teams split their two matches last season, with each team winning on its home court. Dakota State won the first meeting on Sept. 16, 2010 at DSU Fieldhouse in a five-set thriller by the score of 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-7. Briar Cliff took the second meeting with the Trojans on Oct. 4 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Chargers swept DSU in three straight sets (25-18, 25-17 and 25-23).
2011 IN REVIEW: Dakota State recorded their most wins for the first time since 2005 as the Trojans completed the 2011 season with an overall record of 16-22. DSU qualified for the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., losing to top-seed La Sierra (Calif.) 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 25-20 and 29-27) and fourth-seed Mayville State (N.D.) 3-1 (10-25, 25-12, 25-21 and 25-22) in pool play. Stephanie Kruggel and Kristen DiPaola were named to A.I.I. All-Conference team. Kruggel joined the 1000-career kill club at Dakota State. Kruggel and Lauren LaBar both completed their volleyball collegiate career. Both Kruggel and LaBar each were named to Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.
2012 ROSTER: Dakota State have 14 players on this year's volleyball roster. The Trojans return eight players from last year's team. DiPaola, Katie Green and Taylor Mosco will be seniors this year. Mandi Atkins and Shayna Dwyer are the two juniors for DSU. There are three sophomores on the teamâ€”Rhannon Gardner, Caitlin Pick and Stacey Schuller. The Trojans have six new faces on the team this yearâ€”Hannah Creed, Chelsey Foster, Michele Rogers, Jasmine Parce, Victoria Sopko and Allison Thielsen. Amy Veenhof is entering her fourth season as Trojan Volleyball head coach, assisted by Megan Kusler (first season).
BUSY SCHEDULE AHEAD: The Dakota State University prepares for their busiest schedule of the season in coming weeks. The Trojans play a pair of matches from the Great Plains Athletic Conference-at Northwestern (Iowa) on Aug. 28 and versus Morningside on Aug. 29. DSU will host a triangular on Sept. 1 with Waldorf (Iowa) and Peru State (Neb.). Dakota State will play at Mount Marty on Sept. 4 in Yankton, S.D. The Trojans will head to the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. on Sept. 7-8. DSU will play South Dakota Mines, Clarke (Iowa), Saint Mary (Neb.) and host-team Dakota Wesleyan at the Corn Palace.
INDEPENDENT VOLLEYBALL JAMBOREE: Six independent schools - five schools from the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) - will play in the Independent Volleyball Jamboree at DSU Fieldhouse on the weekend of Sept. 21-22. Teams included in the jamboree are host-team Dakota State, Ashford (Iowa), Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.), South Dakota Mines and Valley City State (N.D.). The jamboree hits off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 21 and 9 a.m. on Sept. 22 with six matches scheduled on each day.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fourth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Megan Kusler is in her first season as an assistant coach.

The Trojans head to Orange City, Iowa for a match-up with Northwestern (Iowa) on Tuesday night (Aug. 28) at 7:30 p.m. DSU returns home on Wednesday, Aug. 29 for a match with Morningside. On Sept. 1, the Trojans host Waldorf (Iowa) at 2 p.m. and Peru State (Neb.) at 6 p.m. as part of DSU Triangular at DSU Fieldhouse.
