BOX SCORE - A.I.I. BASEBALL POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT PHOTOS

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - In the second day of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Baseball Postseason Tournament at CSUSM Baseball Field, No. 3 seed Mayville State (N.D.) remained alive by defeating No. 6 seed Dakota State 13-0 Thursday afternoon.  It was the first loss for DSU in the double-elimination tournament.  Five teams remains in the postseason tournament, which continues through Saturday.

Dakota State dropped their overall record to 26-25.  Mayville State, which lost to No. 4 seed Thomas (Ga.) 14-4 in eight innings Wednesday afternoon, improved their record to 34-18.

After two scoreless innings, Mayville State exploded for four runs (all with two outs) in the bottom of the third inning for their first lead of the game.  With bases loaded and two outs situation for the Comets, James Olderbak recorded an RBI walk to give MaSU a 1-0 lead.  Brad Ferraro added a 3-RBI double to extend the Comets' lead to 4-0.

Mayville State made it 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs scored.  Duell Higbe recorded an RBI double and Spencer Mallonee added a 2-RBI single.

The Comets scored in the bottom sixth, seventh and eight frames to secure the win.

Dakota State recorded four singles in the game.  Rays Roman, Anyelo Roman, Max Garza and Kyle Braun each had a single.  The Trojans left nine runners on base.

Ferraro was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and produced three RBIs for Mayville State.  Kurtis McCallum and Mallonee each added two hits and two RBIs.  Ricky Alvernaz had a solo home run.  MaSU had 12 runners left on base.

The Comets outhit the Trojans 10-4 in the game.

Seth Doxey (4-4) took the loss for DSU.  He tossed 3 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on four hits.  Doxey struck out three MaSU's batters.  Josh Caven worked 1 1/3 inning in relief and gave up three runs on three hits.  Seth Rockafellow pitched sixth inning and allowed a run.  Kyle Bradbury, Drew Sweeter and JD Farley each pitched in relief for the Trojans.

Nick Anderson (5-2) picked up the win for the Comets as he pitched a complete game.  He limited the Trojans to four hits and allowed five walks.  Anderson recorded seven strikeouts.

Dakota State looks to remain alive in the A.I.I. Baseball Postseason Tournament Friday.  The Trojans will play the loser of No. 5 seed Arizona Christian or No. 4 seed Thomas (Ga.) in one of the elimination games.  First pitch is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. (Central Time)/9 a.m. (Pacific Time) at CSUSM Baseball Field in San Marcos, Calif.

No. 2 Jamestown (N.D.), which rallied back from 7-4 deficit with five runs scored in the bottom of the eighth inning to eliminate the top-seed and defending champion Cal State San Marcos 9-7 in the first game Thursday, faces Mayville State in another elimination game at 2:30 p.m. (CT)/12:30 p.m. (PT).

The winner of Arizona Christian/Thomas game will play at 6 p.m. (CT)/4 p.m. (PT) against the winner of first game on Thursday morning (Dakota State vs. Arizona Christian/Thomas loser).

The championship game is set for Saturday.  The A.I.I. champion and runner-up teams each earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Baseball National Tournament Opening round, which starts next weekend.
