THIS WEEK: The six-team Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Baseball Postseason tournament is slated to start on Wednesday, May 2 at CSUSM Baseball Field in San Marcos, Calif. The double-elimination tournament continues through Saturday, May 5 with the championship game. Dakota State (25-24 overall record), the sixth-seed in the tournament, will visit the top-seed and defending A.I.I. Baseball champion Cal State San Marcos (27-20) at 2:30 p.m. (Central Time)/12:30 p.m. (Pacific Time).
AUTOMAIC BIDS: The Association of Independent Institutions will be sending two schools to the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round. The tournament's champion and runner-up each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament. The national tournament's opening round, which begins on May 11, will be held at nine difference campus sites (announced by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). The 46 national qualifiers for the national opening round will be announced on May 6. The winner in each nine different sites will advance to the Avista-NAIA World Series to be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.
A.I.I. BASEBALL POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS: The host-team Cal State San Marcos, Arizona Christian, Dakota State, Jamestown (N.D.), Mayville State (N.D.) and Thomas (Ga.) are the six qualifiers that will compete in the A.I.I. Baseball postseason tournament. The tournament features a double-elimination format. No. 2 seed Jamestown (31-14-1) and No. 5 seed Arizona Christian (29-20) kick off the postseason tournament on Wednesday at 9 a.m. (Pacific Time). DSU takes on the host team CSU San Marcos at 12:30 p.m. (PT). No. 3 seed Mayville State (32-17) will face No. 4 Thomas (Ga.) (24-21) at 4 p.m. to complete the opening round on May 2. The tournament continues through Saturday, May 5 with the championship game. All games will be held at CSUSM Baseball Field in San Marcos, Calif.

TROJANS END REGULAR SEASON WITH A BANG AT HOME: Dakota State recorded a combined 31 runs and 35 hits on April 24 to sweep Dordt (Iowa), a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, at Flynn Field. The Trojans scored at least one run for nine straight innings until the fourth inning of the second game. DSU won their third straight game before heading into the A.I.I. Baseball Postseason Tournament. Dakota State finished their home schedule with a 9-5 record.
RECORD-BREAKING: Anyelo Roman currently holds the DSU school record for most home runs in a single season with 16. He also tied the school record with the most runs batted in (RBI) with 53 with Greg Biagi (2007). Jason Hershfield is second in the Trojan record book with 13 home runs this season. He tied the record for most shutouts in a single season with two (2) as a starting pitcher. Hershfield is second in the DSU school record book for most strikeouts in a single season with 77 strikeouts.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, April 30, Dakota State ranks 10th in the nation in home runs per game (1.0) and 45th in slugging percentage (.440). Anyelo Roman is fifth in the nation in home runs (16), ninth in slugging percentage (.765) and 30th in RBIs (53). Jason Hershfield ranks ninth in the nation in batters struck out per nine inning (11.61), 13th in home runs (13), 20th in total saves (7) and 42nd in total batters struck out (77). Seth Doxey is 32nd in the nation in total earned runs allowed (16) and 34th in total runs allowed with 22.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Anyelo Roman leads Dakota State in batting averageâ€”0.377 with 61 hits. Anyelo Roman records 53 RBIs (1.1), which leads in the independent conference. Rays Roman swipes 20 bases for the Trojans this season (0.4 stolen bases per game) and records three triples this season. Seth Doxey leads the team in earned run average with 2.40 with 16 earned runs in 60 innings. Jason Hershfield averages 11.6 strikeouts per nine innings (77 total strikeouts), which also is the leader in the A.I.I. conference He leads the team with seven saves.
