MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team kicked off their homecoming weekend, hosting NCAA Division II and former Dakota Athletic Conference foe South Dakota Mines Friday night. The Trojans suffered a 3-1 tough defeat to the Hardrockers at DSU Fieldhouse.
South Dakota Mines ended DSU's three-match winning streak. The Trojans dropped their overall record 7-11. SDM won their fifth straight match to raise their record to 9-3.
With SDM leading at 8-7 in the opening set, the Hardrockers scored five straight points to make it 13-7. The Trojans rallied back with a 10-3 run to regain their lead at 18-17. South Dakota Mines closed out the first set victory with an 8-1 scoring run (25-19).
Both teams battled in the second set with the lead no more than four points (DSU at 20-16). There were eight ties in the second set. DSU recorded a second-set 25-21 win to tie the match at 1-1.
DSU raced to a 5-1 lead in the third set as the Hardrockers committed four attack errors. With DSU leading at 19-18, SDM used a 7-0 scoring run and secured the third set with the score of 25-20.
As the Trojans led at 10-8, South Dakota Mines went on to score eight straight points to overtake the lead at 16-10. DSU came back and tied the fourth set at 22-22 and 23-23, but fell short as the Hardrockers scored the final two points of the match (25-23).
Two players recorded in double-digit kills for DSU. Kristen DiPaola had 18 kills. Stephanie Kruggel added 11 kills. Stacey Schuller contributed 37 set assists.
Kruggel had 12 digs for Trojans' defense. Mandi Atkins added nine digs. Kruggel recorded six service aces.
Janelle Strampe had 15 kills for SDM. Sara Schmidt added 12 kills. Leanne Hinrichs recorded 10 kills. Carsyn Garcia had 40 assists.
Rachel Pekarek led the Hardrockers' defense with 17 digs. Garcia added 14 digs. Madisen Lane had 10 digs. Schmidt had five block assists.
South Dakota Mines outhit the Trojans 55-43. DSU had nine service aces compared to the Hardrockers' one.
SDM recorded 11 team blocks compared to DSU's two.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans host Valley City State in the annual Trojan homecoming match. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
