THIS WEEK: After posting two wins last week, Dakota State (6-10 overall record) looks to extend their current winning streak this week as they play three matches. The Trojans head to Mount Marty in Yankton, S.D. on Tuesday night for both teams' second meeting of the season. On Friday night, DSU begins their three-match home stand at DSU Fieldhouse versus NCAA Division II South Dakota Mines. The Trojans welcome Valley City State on Saturday afternoon as part of DSU's annual homecoming festivities.
MATCH TIMES: The Trojans and Lancers battle out with a junior varsity match at 6 p.m. on Tuesday night, followed by a varsity match at Cimpl Arena. First serve on Friday night is set for 7 p.m. versus SD Mines. On Saturday, the Vikings and Trojans will get started at 1 p.m. Both Friday and Saturday matches are against former Dakota Athletic Conference members and will be held at DSU Fieldhouse. All times are central.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State recorded a season-high .323 hitting percentage as the Trojans swept Presentation (S.D.) 25-11, 25-13 and 27-25 on Sept. 14. The Trojans remained undefeated at home by defeating Briar Cliff in a five-set thriller 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25 and 15-7 on Sept. 16.
LAST MEETING: DSU won the last meeting with Mount Marty in three straight sets on Sept. 7 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans won each set by two points (27-25, 27-25 and 25-23). The Trojans defeated South Dakota Mines (25-14, 26-24 and 25-20) on Oct. 15, 2010 in Rapid City, S.D. in both teams' last meeting. Valley City State won a five-set thriller over DSU at the Corn Palace Classic on Sept. 2, 2011 in their first meeting of the season (18-25, 28-26, 25-20, 20-25 and 15-13).
THEMES: Neon night is the theme for Trojan home volleyball match versus South Dakota Mines on Friday night. On Saturday afternoon, homecoming superhero is the theme as part of the annual DSU's homecoming, honoring superheroes since 1881.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Stephanie Kruggel leads the team in kills with 181 (3.3 kills per set). In addition, she records 38 blocks (0.7 blocks per set). Stacey Schuller contributes 502 set assists with an average of 9.0 assists per set. Lauren LaBar leads the team with 16 service aces (0.3 aces per set). Katie Green leads DSU's defense with 197 digs (3.5 digs per set).
NAIA STATISTICAL RANKINGS: Three Dakota State University volleyball athletes are ranked in the top 50 in the following categories - Stacey Schuller ranks 26th in the nation in total assists (502); Stephanie Kruggel ranks 43rd in total kills (181) and Kristen DiPaola ranks 48th in total kills (172).
DSU VERSUS GPAC: Dakota State is currently 3-3 against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) this season. The Trojans posted victories over Dakota Wesleyan, Mount Marty and Briar Cliff. DSU lost to Morningside, Hastings and nationally-ranked Doane.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her third season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached one all-conference player and five NAIA All-American Academic scholar-athletes. Jessica VanLoy is in her first season as an assistant coach. She will guide the Trojans' junior varsity volleyball program this fall. Becky Smith is in her first year as a student assistant coach.
