MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball returned home for the first time this season Wednesday night after playing nine straight matches on the road. The Trojans welcomed their in-state rival Mount Marty in the DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State swept the Lancers 3-0, where each set was decided by two points (27-25, 27-25 and 25-23).
Dakota State won their third straight match to raise their overall record to 4-6. The Trojans won their fifth straight meeting with the Lancers. Mount Marty dropped their overall record to 3-4.
Prior to the match, Dakota State honored their former teammate Ashley Engel, who passed away last July in a boating accident. Ashley's sister Allison did the first serve of the match
There were 15 ties and seven lead changes in the first set. Dakota State scored its final three points of the set to win 27-25. The Trojans recorded 15 kills compared to the Lancers' 12.
DSU opened the second set with a 4-1 lead. The Lancers used a 7-3 scoring run to overtake an 8-7 lead. With the Lancers leading at 15-14, Dakota State scored six straight points to build a 20-15 lead. Mount Marty rallied back with a 7-2 scoring run to tie the set at 22-22. The teams traded leads until DSU scored its final three points of the second set (27-25). The Lancers outhit the Trojans 15-13 in the second set.
Mount Marty jumped to an 8-5 lead in the third set. With the Lancers leading at 11-9, Dakota State went on a 5-0 scoring tear to take a 14-11 lead. The Trojans extended their lead to 18-13. The Lancers trimmed their deficit to 20-18. Dakota State eventually closed out the match with a 25-23 third set victory. Dakota State had two more kills than Mount Marty in the third set (14-12).
Stephanie Kruggel recorded a match-high 17 kills for Dakota State. She recorded a killing efficiency of .382. Kristen DiPaola added 13 kills. Lauren LaBar had 10 kills. Stacey Schuller produced 36 set assists.
Kruggel led the Trojans' defense with 15 digs. DiPaola had a solo block and block assist.
DSU had nine service aces in the match. Mandi Atkins had three service aces. Katie Green, Kruggel and Schuller each had two aces.
For Mount Marty, Carlie Lambert had 16 kills and two service aces. Kate LIngscheit added nine kills. Caitlyn Illg recorded 27 assists and 20 digs. Jena Peters had two solo blocks and four block assists. Emily Schreur added four block assists.
The Lancers had eight blocks in the match compared to the Trojans' two.
Dakota State outhit Mount Marty 42-39 and .211-.188.
DSU won the junior varsity match 2-1.
Dakota State returns back on the road this weekend. The Trojans participate in the two-day Hastings Quality Inn Classic in Hastings, Neb. DSU kick-off with the first match versus Southern Nazarene (Okla.) at 1 p.m. on Friday.
