DES MOINES, Iowa - Evangel (Mo.) and St. Xavier (Ill.) spoiled Dakota State's season opening matches by charting 3-0 (25-9, 25-20 and 25-12) and 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-17 and 25-11) over the Trojans Saturday at the Grand View Tournament at Charles S. Johnson Wellness Center.
The losses drop the Trojans to 0-2 on the season.
Evangel 3, Dakota State 0
Evangel, defending 2010 Heart of American Athletic Conference regular season champions, defeated DSU in three straight sets. The Crusaders went 2-0 in their first day of the tournament.
Stephanie Kruggel recorded six kills and 2.5 blocks for the Trojans. Lauren LaBar and Kristen DiPaola each added five kills. Stacey Schuller recorded a double-double of 16 assists and 10 digs. Jeena Lentz added 13 digs.
Dakota State had 18 kills, but committed 19 attack errors in the match.
St. Xavier 3, Dakota State 1
The Cougars won the first set 25-14. Dakota State tied the match at 1-1 with a 26-24 second set victory. St. Xavier, qualified for the NAIA Volleyball National Tournament Opening Round a season ago, took the final two sets to secure the win. The Cougars raised their record to 3-0.
Kruggel was the lone Trojan to crack the double-figure kills mark with 13 kills. She added 2.5 blocks. DiPaola had eight kills.
Schuller recorded her second straight double-double of the season with 23 assists and 11 digs.
Lentz recorded 13 digs to lead Dakota State's defense. Katie Green added 12.
DSU had 29 kills in the match. The Trojans suffered nine reception errors.
Dakota State continues play in the Grand View Tournament on Saturday, facing College of St. Mary (Neb.) at 12 p.m. and Park (Mo.) at 2 p.m. (both times are Central).
