MADISON, S.D. - The Trojan volleyball team hosted its last DAC regular season match against DAC's traveling partner, Mayville State, on Wednesday night. The Comets used strong starts in each set to defeat the Trojans by the scores of 22-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-19 at DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State ended their regular season with an overall record of 11-21 and 4-10 in the DAC. Mayville State lifted their overall record to 5-23 and 3-11 in the conference. The Comets snapped their three-match losing streak.
Mayville State opened up with a 14-9 lead in the first set. With the Comets' leading at 17-14, DSU went on to score five straight points to overtake the lead at 19-17. The Comets rallied to tie at 19-19, but the Trojans secured the opening set with a 6-3 closing run.
The Comets used their strong start to open the second set with an 11-3 lead. DSU used 15-4 scoring tear to take a lead at 18-15. Mayville State went on a 6-0 run to overtake a 21-18 lead. The Trojans fell short as the Comets took the 25-22 second set victory.
In the third set, Mayville State raced to an 11-5 run. The Trojans trimmed Comets' lead at 12-9. Mayville State closed out the third set with a 13-9 run.
The Comets rushed to a 13-4 lead in the fourth set. Dakota State trimmed Mayville's lead to 16-10, but could not get any closer as the Comets secured the match victory.
Three players recorded in double digits in kills for Dakota State. Amy Pheneger and Stephanie Kruggel each recorded 12 kills. Mandy Baxa added 11 kills. Mollie Merriam contributed 38 set assists.
Katie Green led the Trojans' defense with 19 digs. Mandi Atkins added 18 digs. Kruggel and Merriam each had 15 digs. Pheneger had 13 digs, three solo blocks and a block assist.
Merriam recorded four service aces for the Trojans.
For Mayville State, Kacie Fortmann recorded 25 kills and a killing efficiency of .458. Nicky Carrison added 11 kills. Ariana Odegard produced 38 assists.
Ashley Torgusson led the Comets' defense with 20 digs. Emily Liljestrand added 15 digs.
Dakota State committed 13 service errors in the match. The Trojans served 84.7 percent compared to Comets' 95.8 percent.
Mayville State outhit the Trojans .151-.142, but DSU had two more kills than the Comets (50-48).
It was the final home match of the college career for seniors Margie Anthony, Erica Gall, Pheneger and Ashley Schulte.
Dakota State will enter the DAC Volleyball Postseason Tournament as a sixth-seeded. The Trojans travel to Minot, N.D. on Saturday to take on third-seeded Minot State in the quarterfinal action.
