Box Score vs. Mayville State
MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team hosted Minot State Beavers Saturday afternoon at the DSU Fieldhouse. Minot State won a see-saw match by the scores of 25-21, 25-23, 24-26 and 25-23.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 11-20 and 4-9 in the DAC Conference. Minot State raised their overall record to 10-18 and 8-5 in the conference. The Beavers secured a home-court advantage in the first round of the DAC Postseason Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Nov. 6.
It could be both teams' last meeting before making transitions next year. Minot State will be making a move to NCAA Division II. The Trojans make their transition to NAIA independent.
With DSU leading 4-3 in the first set, Minot State scored five straight points to lead at 8-4. The Trojans cut the deficit to 22-20, but the Beavers closed out with a 25-21 first set win.
Minot State raced to a 5-1 lead to open the second set. The Trojans went on an 8-4 run to tie at 9-9. At 15-15, the Beavers went on a 4-0 scoring tear to lead at 19-15. DSU rallied back to tie at 22-22 and 23-23, but fell short as the Beavers scored the final two points to take the second set victory (25-23).
The Trojans scored five straight points to open the third set. With DSU leading 18-13, the Beavers scored eight of the next nine points to grab a 21-19 lead. The Trojans rallied back and tied at 21-21. Both teams tied at 22-22, 23-23 and 24-24. Minot State suffered two straight attack errors to help the Trojans secure the third set victory.
The fourth set saw a see-saw battle between the Trojans and Beavers. With Minot State leading at 19-16, the Trojans reeled off five straight points to take a 21-19 lead. The Beavers closed out the fourth set with a 6-3 run for a 25-23 win.
Amy Pheneger recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 16 digs for the Trojans. Mollie Merriam added a double-double of 29 set assists and 16 digs. Margie Anthony had nine kills.
Stephanie Kruggel led the Trojans' defense with 22 digs. Katie Green added 18 digs. Ashley Schulte had three solo blocks and two block assists. Mandy Baxa and Merrima each had three block assists.
Three players recorded in double digits in kills for the Beavers. Jen Dixon had 15 kills. Janice-Rose Reinbolt added 13 digs. Jennifer Yausie recorded 10 kills. Abbey Aide produced 48 assists.
Jenna Moffatt had 22 digs for Minot State. Shari Dueck added 17 digs. Dixon had 13 digs. Yausie contributed 12 digs and Aide added 11 digs.
Minot State outhit the Trojans 56-42 and .164-.129 in the match. The Beavers recorded 10 blocks compared to the Trojans' seven.
Dakota State concludes their regular season on Wednesday. The Trojans will host their DAC's traveling partner, Mayville State, in a key DAC match-up to determine the final postseason seeding. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse. Seniors will be recognized prior to the match.
