MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team returned home Wednesday night. The Trojans hosted their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in their second annual 'Dig Pink' night. DSU dominated the Tigers 3-0 (25-11, 25-18 and 25-21).
Dakota State won their third straight match and lifted their overall record to 11-16. The Trojans finished the season with a 5-7 record against teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference. DWU suffered their sixth straight loss and dropped their overall record to 8-20.
In the opening set, the Trojans dominated the Tigers as DSU raced to a 16-5 lead. Dakota State closed the first set with a 9-4 run.
With the Trojans leading 13-9 in the second set, DSU scored eight of the next nine points to make it 21-10. DSU eventually won the second set by the score of 25-18.
Dakota State and Dakota Wesleyan tied the third set 11 times. At 18-18, the Trojans secured the match victory with a 7-3 closing run.
Stephanie Kruggel led the Trojans' offense with nine kills. Mollie Merriam and Ashley Schulte each had six kills. Merriam contributed 23 set assists. Mandy Baxa recorded two service aces.
Katie Green recorded 11 digs for DSU. Amy Pheneger added eight digs.
For Dakota Wesleyan, Meghan Cronberg had nine kills. Andrea Johnson added six kills. Carina Fesenmaier produced 21 assists.
Brooke Warne had nine digs for the Tigers.
DSU outhit the Tigers 33-30. The Trojans recorded 12 attack errors with a killing efficiency of .247. Dakota Wesleyan suffered 20 attack errors in the match with a killing efficiency of .100.
The Trojans committed five service errors with a serving percentage of .930. The Tigers recorded 10 service errors and a serving percentage of .808.
Dakota State returns back to DAC conference action this weekend in North Dakota. The Trojans face Jamestown on Friday night in Jamestown at 7 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, DSU will visit Valley City State in Valley City at 3 p.m.
