THIS WEEK: Dakota State (22-23 overall record) will play a total of four baseball games this week against in-state rival teams. The Trojans visit the University of Sioux Falls (8-24) in a doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls. On Thursday late afternoon, DSU heads to Mitchell's Caldwell Park to face Dakota Wesleyan (15-27). Both doubleheaders is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on each night.
LAST MEETING: The last time DSU and USF squared off was on March 18, 2009 at Harmodon Park. The Cougars won the first game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 2-1 victory over Dakota State. DSU rallied back in the second game by the score of 7-3 to earn a split with USF. The Trojans swept Dakota Wesleyan in their last meeting on March 21 at Trojan Field. DSU recorded a combined seven home runs to defeat the Tigers 6-5 and 6-3.
ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF SIOUX FALLS: Matt Guiliano is in his fifth year as USF head baseball coach. He complied a career record of 98-111, including their current season overall record of 8-24. The Cougars is currently a transitional member with the NCAA Division II and will became a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference next season. USF is 4-5 at home, 3-18 on the road and 1-1 on neutral sites. The Cougars split a doubleheader with their future NSIC conference foe Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.) on April 14.
ABOUT DAKOTA WESLEYAN: Dakota Wesleyan, under their guidance of fourth-year coach Steve Gust, is 15-27 overall record and 4-6 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference play. The Tigers are winless in four games at home, 5-16 on the road and 10-7 on neutral fields. DWU split their doubleheader with Northwestern (Iowa) on April 13 in Orange City, Iowa. The Tigers will play a home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 17 versus Midland (Neb.).
TROJAN 12-GAME STRETCH ON ROAD: Dakota State will conclude their 12-game road stretch this week before playing their final two regular-season games at home on April 24. The Trojans are currently 4-4 on their current 12-game stretch on the road. DSU is 15-18 on the road this season.
DSU VERSUS IN-STATE TEAMS: Dakota State remains undefeated in six games (6-0) against in-state teams after the doubleheader sweep over Mount Marty on April 9. The Trojans will play two more in-state teams this week, at University of Sioux Falls on April 18 and at Dakota Wesleyan on April 19.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, April 16, Dakota State ranks ninth in the nation in home runs per game (1.0). Anyelo Roman is fourth in the nation in home runs with 14, ninth in slugging percentage (.745) and 14th in total bases per game (2.5). Jason Hershfield is 5th in total home runs with 13, 13th in total saves with seven, 14th in batters struck out per nine innings (11.2) and 46th in total batters struck out with 63 strikeouts.
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Anyelo Roman leads Dakota State in batting averageâ€”0.362 with 54 hits. Anyelo Roman records 41 RBIs (0.9) with 13 doubles and 14 home runs. Rays Roman swipes 18 bases for the Trojans this season (0.4 stolen bases per game). Seth Doxey leads the team in earned run average with 2.21 with 14 earned runs in 57 innings. Jason Hershfield averages 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings (63 total strikeouts). He leads the team with seven saves. Chaz Palmer and Rays Roman each record two triples this year for DSU.
A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT: The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5. Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament. The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament. Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victoria (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game. The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA). The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.

UP NEXT: Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule on Tuesday, April 24 at Flynn Field. The Trojans host Dordt (Iowa), a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, in a doubleheader. First game is set for 4 p.m. with the second game to follow in approximately 20-25 minutes after the completion of the first game.
