MITCHELL, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team began their four-match stretch on the road Tuesday. The Trojans won the first two sets, but fell in the final three sets as Dakota Wesleyan rallied to defeat DSU at the Christen Family Wellness/Center on the DWU campus.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 7-13. DWU raised their overall record to 6-12.
The Trojans won the first two sets by the identical score of 25-19. The Tigers came back and dominated the final three sets by the scores of 25-14, 25-13 and 15-11.
Mandy Baxa led the Trojans' offense with 11 kills. Amy Pheneger, Stephanie Kruggel and Ashley Schulte each had nine kills. Mollie Merriam contributed 30 set assists.
Five Trojans players recorded double digits in digs. Katie Green led the Trojans with 26 digs. Kruggel and Merriam each added 14 digs. Pheneger had 12 digs. Lauren LaBar had 11 digs.
Pheneger, Kruggel, Schulte and Baxa each had three block assists.
For Dakota Wesleyan, Ashley Kley recorded a double-double of 14 kills and 17 digs. She had five service aces. Andrea Johnson added 11 kills and recorded 4.5 blocks. Carina Fesenmaier had 20 assists and 10 digs. Stacie Brinker produced 15 assists and 10 digs.
Brooke Warne and Sara Stahlke each had 16 digs for Dakota Wesleyan.
The Trojans had a slight edge over the Tigers in kills (46-45), killing efficiency (.121-.118) and digs (93-91). Dakota Wesleyan recorded 11 service aces compared to the Trojans' two.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they return back to DAC conference action this weekend. The Trojans travel to Minot State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Dickinson State on Saturday at 4 p.m. (CT)/3 p.m. (MT).
