MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team concluded their five-match home stand on Saturday afternoon against top team in the DAC, Jamestown. The Jimmies came on top in four thrilling sets that each set was decided by two points (23-25, 25-23, 28-26, 27-25) at the DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 7-12 and 1-3 in the DAC conference. Jamestown raised their overall record to 8-11 and remained undefeated in four conference matches. The Jimmies continued their DAC conference winning streak to 29 matches.
Jamestown led at 18-14 in the first set. The Trojans went on to reel off five straight points to regain the lead at 19-18. The Trojans came on top and secured the first set by the score of 25-23.
DSU opened the second set with five straight points and extended to 17-9. Jamestown used an 11-6 run to cut the deficit to 23-20. The Jimmies closed the second set with five straight points for a 25-23 victory to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, Jamestown took the lead at 16-12. The Trojans scored six straight points to overtake the lead at 18-16. With Trojans leading at 21-19, Jamestown used a 4-0 run to take a 23-21 lead. Both teams were tied four times before the Jimmies scored the final two points to take a 28-26 third set win.
The Trojans went on to lead at 19-13 in the fourth set before Jamestown cut the deficit at 19-16. DSU led at 24-22, but fell short as the Jimmies closed the match with a 5-1 run for a 27-25 fourth set victory.
Stephanie Kruggel led the Trojans' offense with 13 kills. She added 12 set assists, two service aces and eight digs. Ashley Schulte added 10 kills and recorded a killing efficiency of .588. She had four block assists and a solo block. Mollie Merriam produced 19 assists and two service aces.
Amy Pheneger and Mandi Atkins each had 12 digs for DSU.
For Jamestown, Samantha Revering had 14 kills and 16 digs. She recorded six service aces. Katie Zent h had 13 digs, four block assists and a solo block. Shannon Fee added 13 kills. Emille Schutta contributed 25 assists. Kelsey Deragisch added 23 assists.
Revering and Krysten Williams each had 16 digs for the Jimmies. Schutta and Deragisch each added 12 digs.
The Jimmies out hit the Trojans 61-44 and .177-.173. Jamestown suffered 33 attack errors in the match compared to the Trojans' 20.
Dakota State will head on the road on Tuesday. The Trojans travel to Mitchell, S.D. to face their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan in a non-conference match. First serve is slated at 7 p.m.
