MADISON, S.D. - The Trojan Volleyball team continued their five-match home stand on Friday night as they hosted Valley City State in a DAC conference action. The Trojans raced to a 2-0 lead (25-23 and 25-16) before suffering the third set defeat (18-25). DSU rallied in the fourth set (25-22) to take a 3-1 match win at the DSU Fieldhouse.
Dakota State remained undefeated during the Trojan Homecoming week -- including a win over Mount Marty on Wednesday. The Trojans raised their overall record to 7-11 and recorded their first DAC conference win in three matches. Valley City State dipped their overall record to 5-15 and remained winless in three conference matches.
With DSU leading at 14-12 in the opening set, the Vikings scored five straight points to overtake the lead at 17-14 and extended to 19-16. The Trojans went on a 9-6 closing run to close the first set with a 25-23 victory.
In the second set, Dakota State opened with an 11-6 lead. The Trojans recorded 15 kills and two attack errors and went on to win the second set by the score of 25-16.
Valley City State recorded the first three points of the third set. The Vikings extended their lead to 16-10. The Trojans cut the deficit to 20-18 before the Vikings scored five straight points to extend the match.
The Vikings and Trojans tied the fourth set in eight different occasions. The Trojans led 16-15 and went on a 7-4 run to expand their lead at 23-19. Valley City State scored three straight points to cut the deficit to 23-22. A kill by Amy Pheneger and a solo block from Ashley Schulte sealed the victory for DSU.
Three DSU players recorded in double digits kills. Schulte recorded 14 kills and a killing efficiency of .444. Pheneger added 11 kills and Margie Anthony had 10 kills. Mollie Merriam contributed 28 set assists. Kruggel added 12 assists.
Mandi Atkins led the Trojans' defense with 15 digs. Anthony added 12 digs and Pheneger had 10 digs. Schulte recorded a solo block and four block assists.
For Valley City State, Kadee Martin had 10 kills. Mariah Martin added nine kills. Sabrina Heywood and Jasmine Nyx each had eight kills. Kelsey Hanson produced 35 assists.
Mardee Lander recorded 14 digs for the Vikings. Hanson added 13 digs. Nyx had three service aces.
The Trojans outhit the Vikings 49-42 and .316-.153. The Vikings had nine service aces compared to the Trojans' five. DSU suffered 10 service errors compared to the Vikings' four.
Dakota State concludes their five-match home stand Saturday afternoon. The Trojans host Jamestown, who is undefeated in DAC conference play. First serve is slated at 3 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
