HASTINGS, Neb. - The Trojan volleyball team played their final regular season tournament Friday and Saturday. Dakota State competed in the Hastings/Quality Inn Volleyball Classic hosted by Hastings College at the Lynn Farrell Arena. The Trojans recorded two wins and three losses in the classic.
DSU's current overall record is 5-9. The Trojans faced four opponents from the Great Plains Athletic Conference in the classic.
Dakota State defeated Midland Lutheran and Bethany (Kan.) on the first day of the classic on Friday. The Trojans suffered two defeats from Hastings and Concordia (Neb.) on Saturday.
Dakota State 3, Midland Lutheran 1 - Box Score
The Trojans swept the season series with the Warriors with a four-set victory. DSU posted a 16-25, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21 victory over Midland Lutheran. The Trojans defeated the Warriors in five sets at Grand View (Iowa) Tournament.
DSU's Margie Anthony posted a double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs. Amy Pheneger added nine kills and recorded 2.5 blocks. Mollie Merriam contributed 31 assists.
Mandi Atkins recorded 12 digs and two service aces for the Trojans. Stephanie Kruggel added two service aces.
Mandy Frogner and Anthony each had two blocks.
The Trojans had 40 kills and recorded a .162 killing efficiency in the match. DSU had a total of 8.5 team blocks.
#5 Northwestern (Iowa) 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score
For the second straight week, the Trojans were unable to find solutions to defeat Northwestern (Iowa), No. 5 in the current NAIA Volleyball national poll. The Red Raiders swept DSU with the scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-9.
Pheneger and Anthony each had four kills for the Trojans. Merriam had 11 assists.
As a team, Dakota State recorded 18 kills with a killing percentage of .089.
Dakota State 3, Bethany (Kan.) 1 - Box Score
The Trojans bounced back in the winning column as they defeated Bethany (Kan.) in four sets. DSU posted a 25-18 first set win before losing the second set by the score of 26-24. The Trojans won the third (25-21) and fourth (25-16) sets to secure the victory.
Kruggel and Anthony each posted double-double figures for the Trojans. Kruggel had 12 kills and 10 digs. Anthony recorded 10 kills and 11 digs. Ashley Schulte added 14 kills. Merriam had 42 set assists.
Kruggel tied for the second most service aces in a match in the Trojan Volleyball record book with six aces.
Atkins led the Trojans with 14 digs. Pheneger recorded three blocks and Mandy Baxa added 2.5 blocks.
The Trojans outhit Bethany 52-35 and .250-.110.
Hastings 3, Dakota State 1 - Box Score
The host-team Hastings won the first set (25-22). Dakota State rallied back to take the second set with the score of 25-22. The Broncos won the third set (25-17) and held on to win the fourth set by the score of 26-24.
Pheneger had 10 kills for Dakota State. Schulte and Anthony each added nine kills. Merriam had 30 set assists.
Schulte had four blocks in the match for the Trojans. Atkins recorded 22 digs.
The Trojans had 35 kills with a killing efficiency of .131 in the match.
Concordia (Neb.) 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score
Dakota State concluded the classic with a 3-0 defeat from the Bulldogs of Concordia (Neb.). The Bulldogs won by the scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-15.
Anthony led the Trojans with eight kills. She added eight digs. Kruggel recorded seven kills. Merriam contributed 19 assists.
Atkins had nine digs for Trojans' defense.
DSU hit .092 in the match and recorded 25 kills.
Dakota State returns home for the first time this season on Friday. The Trojans open their five-match home stand at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) season will start on Friday as the Trojans host the DAC's tournament champion and last year's NAIA Volleyball National Tournament qualifier Black Hills State. First serve is slated at 7 p.m. On Saturday, DSU hosts South Dakota School of Mines at 3 p.m.
