SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University volleyball team competed in the final day of the University of Sioux Falls volleyball classic Saturday. The Trojans suffered a 3-1 defeat to MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) at the Sioux Falls Lincoln high school gym. DSU concluded the classic with a sweep over Iowa Wesleyan at the Stewart Center.
The Trojans raised their overall record to 3-6. DSU finished 1-3 in the USF Classic.
MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) 3, Dakota State 1 - Box Score
The Pioneers won the first set 25-22. Dakota State rallied to take the second set victory by the score of 25-23. MidAmerican Nazarene (Kan.) won the next two sets with the scores of 25-15 and 25-17 for a 3-1 match victory over the Trojans.
Stephanie Kruggel recorded nine kills and nine digs for the Trojans. Margie Anthony added eight kills and three service aces. Mandy Baxa had seven kills. Mollie Merriam contributed 24 assists.
DSU's Mandi Atkins had 13 digs. Anthony added 12 digs. Baxa had two blocks.
The Trojans had 32 kills and suffered 27 attack errors.
Dakota State 3, Iowa Wesleyan 0 - Box Score
The Trojans swept Iowa Wesleyan with the scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-11.
Dakota State recorded 17 service aces in the match. DSU tied for the second most aces by a team in a match in the Trojan Volleyball record book. Katie Green and Atkins each had four service aces.
Amy Pheneger had eight kills for the Trojans. She added three service aces. Kruggel recorded seven kills and three service aces. Merriam had 20 assists.
Atkins recorded 10 digs for DSU.
Dakota State will compete in the final tournament of the season on Friday and Saturday. The Trojans will face Midland Lutheran, No. 5 Northwestern (Iowa) and Bethany (Kan.) on Friday. On Saturday, DSU faces Hastings and Concordia (Neb.). All matches will be held in Hastings, Neb.
